Errors have occurred while reading this scene, but everything appears normal

I just finished modeling and rigging a character in Maya 2016 for Windows OS, but now it suddenly tells me "errors have occurred while reading this scene that may result in data loss" whenever I open the file. Nothing appears to be missing, and my character model seems to be working all as intended, but I don't know what is making the popup error message appear or how to fix it.

This is what the script editor says:

"// Error: line 0: Cannot find procedure "xgmPreview". //
// Error: line 1: An execution error occured in the expression xgmRefreshPreview. //
// Error: line 0: Cannot find procedure "xgmPreview". //
// Error: line 1: An execution error occured in the expression Kelsie2_xgmRefreshPreview. // "

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi @Anonymous

Do you have XGen in the scene? It seems to be trying to generate an XGen preview which is why the error is appearing.

You can try unloading the Xgen plugin and see if the error still persists.

Thank you for the reply! Unloading the xgen plug-in was what what thought, but I still get the error when opening the file even after unchecking it in the plug-in manager window. The text in the script editor doesn't change either.

I also discovered that the scene is unable to render any images, regardless of renderer, giving me this error:

"// Error: line 0: Cannot find procedure "XgPreRendering"

Hi @Anonymous

If you go to your "Render Settings" window and under the "common" tab, scroll all the way down to the "Render Options" drop down and see if "XgPreRendering" is in one of the Pre render MEL boxes.  Just delete that text from the box and that should clear that up.

@sean.heasley Thanks, doing that solved the rendering problem. I'm still getting errors all over related to XGen. After experimenting, I discovered that each of the button options in the XGen tab gives me errors such as "// Error: line 1: Cannot find procedure "XgCreateDescription"."

It also tells me this error when changing the current frame: "// Error: An execution error occured in the expression Kelsie2_xgmRefreshPreview."

I tried these things on other files too, and they all give me the same errors, although only that one file tells me that errors have occurred while reading the scene. It's as if my XGen folder on my computer has gotten corrupted somehow. Is there a way I can try to reinstall the XGen files? Or do you think maybe reinstalling Maya altogether would help?

Hi @Anonymous

If unloading/reloading the Xgen plugins doesn't solve this the easiest next step would be to try deleting your settings/preferences.

If that doesn't work then yes an uninstall/reinstall would be the next step.

That said, if you aren't using Xgen and have no need for it with this project you could just disable Xgen and ignore these warnings.

@sean.heasley, please excuse the late response, it has been a busy week!

Resetting the preferences seemed to fix things up. Maya is functioning as normal now. My file is stable and usable, although it still bothers me with the warning that errors have occurred while reading it. Is there a way to clear this error message? I can attach the file if it helps.

Hi @Anonymous

I can take a look at it but most likely the warnings aren't doing anything to your work so they can be ignored.
