copy maya hotkey folder content - maya preferences

Hello all,

I understand about how to reset maya preferences.  However, when you restart maya and it re-creates a default maya pref folder to reset all you will lose all of your custom hotkeys.

My question is the following:

Once, you find the hotkey folder is it just one .mel file to copy or many .mel files to copy from your old custom hotkeys in the new pref folder so your old custom hotkeys works with the new preference folder? (I hope this makes sense)

PLEASE PROVIDE SCREEN SHOTS SO I DO NOT MESS THIS UP- 🙂

Please advise and thanks,

Steve

Hi @stevenfila7

We actually have an article on this!

You will need to copy userHotkeys.mel and userNamedCommands.mel from the source computer to the destination computer.   These 2 files are located in:

My Documents/maya/2009/prefs

NamedCommands.png

Hey Sean,

So just to clarify, once I copy these from the old prefs do I just overwrite them into the new prefs?

For example if it gives me the prompt to replace file just go ahead with that?

Also, I am working on a mac OS, is there any articles or strings to go and find these .mel files for mac users?

Please advise and thanks,

Steve

Hi @stevenfila7

Yes you would just paste over those files. This is why out steps for resetting your settings involved just naming the prefs folder Prefs Old. That way if something goes wrong its easy to roll back to the old settings.

For Mac the file path should be something like this:

/Users/USERNAME/Library/Preferences/Autodesk/Maya/VERSION/Prefs
