When holding D, Maya says: "Use manipulator or select a component to change the pivot position and axis orientation." Well I can change the pivot position just fine, and the world transform values are still 0, 0, 0. Awesome so far. But when holding D, the gimbal/handles for rotating disappear. I'm unsure how to change the axis orientation (NOTE: This is for an object, not a joint). I just want to have X pointing forward instead of Z. Just a 90 degree rotation while keeping my transforms 0, 0, 0. Any help is appreciated.

Double click on the Rotate Tool icon to open the settings and verify that "Show Orientation Handle" is checked.
