yep since is just color it should work, I will report this one , anyways all you need to do to make it work again is to turn on textures in the viewport by hitting the 6 key or directly in the viewport icon.
see image below
Thank you for this
Yes same thing with arnold. I don't test it on v-ray and mantal ray.
Hi!
While @john.paul.giancarlo helps only for textured view, saving and re-loading the scene seems to remove the problem completely (until you re-name again)
Was this ever addressed? I am encountering the same problem on the latest update of Maya 2018. I just submitted a bug.
The solution proposed by @john.paul.giancarlo does not work when I rename the material when already in Textured mode. If I rename the material in Textured mode, occasionally the material will work again if I switch to Smooth Shaded mode, and vice versa.
This is a huge problem for my workflow because it my workflow involves naming my materials, haha.
For anyone searching for a practical workaround to this problem:
Pausing, then unpausing the viewport fixes the problem. You still have to do it after every time you rename a material, but it works until they actually fix the bug.
You can put this as a shelf button:
ogs -pause;
ogs -pause;
Thanks for an actual fix!

Great help Garrett Stevens,
Due to my data down limitations (COVID lockdown) I cannot download the complete new version now. This fix has helped me a lot to continue working with the 2018 version with bug.
For others who do not want to use shelf buttons. In the picture below I have marked the pause/unpause button for the view-port.
