Blacked Out Shader

In default lighting in the viewport, when I apply the exact same shader, first to an object I created from polygons, and second to a plant leaf created by converting a plant paint effect object into polygons, the plant leaf shows as all black, while the polygon from scratch shows light and shadow. When rendered, both behave normally but the plant leaf always renders slightly darker? Is there some kind of shader that comes pre-attached to paint effect? What is going on?

Solved my own question when I noticed the shadows from a new light were appearing on the opposite side of the leaf - I reversed the normals and it was fine. Not sure how they got switched in the first place, but seems to happen every time I use paint effects > polygons.

Now everything in the viewport is appearing completely white, on default lighting. Any idea why?
