Interactive groom hairs sticking out

Hey all, I'm using interactive groom on a dog character and when I close and reopen the file, it opens with hairs sticking out all over his body:

Capture.PNG

I've groomed many characters and had this issue before, but in the past it seemed like a memory problem and reopening the file usually fixed it. Now that doesn't seem to be working. I've tried clamping my textures down to 1024 and decreasing the density of the hair, which I've currently got set to 5. I also have a density map plugged in, but the hairs are sticking out everywhere, not just the density lines.

Any advice? Thanks!

Well, I think I found a workaround for now - I generated guides from my groom and fixed those, and then the groom regenerated itself properly. I know guides are the typical workflow but I've never had an issue not using them before, so not sure what was the problem this time around.
