Xgen spewing thousands of errors regarding vertex float xgClumpingWeight

I've inherited a nice scene I'm trying to render, it was generated in Maya 2016 using Xgen.

I'm currently in 2018.3 trying to re-render the scene and on completion of the render I get thousands of these errors, locking up Maya for a few minutes:

I have multiple collections, descriptions, etc. The Xgen folder exists and has data in it. But the error isn't very specific and I can't find a way to suppress it (the render appears to be correct) And ideas on how to solve this would be great.

Hi @Anonymous

 

This could be related to changes that have occurred with Xgen since 2016 and therefore why you're seeing the errors.

 

When you get a chance, can you please zip and attach the scene file here or via dropbox/google drive or another file sharing program so I can take a look at it?

I prefer a blind FTP, I cannot post this publicly. (It's not NDA but I cannot make it available to others by posting a link here.)

 

This scene has quite a few dependencies where many plugins were loaded and I cannot remove them since I do not have these plugins here. Beware!

 

It will also complain about some Pfx Hair as an added bonus but not gotten to that yet....

Thanks for sending me the scene file!

 

I downloaded a trial of Renderman to try and see if the same XGen errors would appear but unfortunately I'm only getting fatal errors on render which I believe is due to the pre and post render MEL you are using.

(XgPreRendering;; pgYetiVRayPreRender)

and

(pgYetiVRayPostRender)

 

That said, I'd like to get a bit more information as I'm going to pass this along to our devs to see if they can assist further.

 

Is the scene rendering normally and just showing the errors or is the render not completing due to the error?

 

Also by chance have you tried rendering this in 2016 where you got the file from and if so does the error still appear?

The pre and post mel should be removed. I forgot he had those in there. My mistake. They're Vray and the scene doesn't use it.

The errors in 2018 are Maya errors, it doesn't matter if I use RenderMan or not. I have only been rendering in 2018 because RenderMan 22 does not/will not support Maya 2016.

The errors happen after the render completes, Maya will lock up and print errors for a few minutes and then respond again.

Ah ok my mistake. I dropped the mel code and just did a straight render with Arnold (without fixing the shader connections) and surprisingly didn't get a single Xgen error.

Ok, that's odd. I'm currently on Maya 2018.3

 

If there's anything you need like ENV variables or similar, let me know. Is it possible the errors being printed by Maya are from our own procedural? We separate our errors, ours print as [rfm] in our own debug settings.

It's definitely possible its from your own procedural.

 

That said if you can let me know what ENV variables you have that would be great because I'm testing this on pretty much vanilla 2018.3 so it wouldn't surprise me if there's a settings/plug-in etc that could be causing this on your end.

If rendering with RenderMan 21.7, you can set the Integrator to PxrOcclusion, it will ignore a lot of things like missing lights, etc and reduce the spew of other errors.

 

I also prevent all other renderers from loading. This means everything except RenderMan and Maya Software. Attached the result of a render as an image. The printout of errors is unending. Somewhere we're not getting the right data for the clumping.

 

Including about 25% of the error output too. The rfm errors are related to the Paintfx Hair not being drawn correctly.

Thanks for sharing your env variables.

 

I added them to mine and tried to render again and got the exact same results so this leads me to believe that this may be something with your own procedurals printing the error.

 

That said, you said the render is working properly right and it's more that this error is just appearing for seemingly no reason right?

I don't get those specific errors for Xgen, so the question becomes what we're missing in our own procedural that's causing this, do you have a link to the correct-relating API? We'd like to solve that.

 

The paintfx hair errors is there but mercifully brief.

Random Xgen question, should be a quick answer: The interactive Xgen does not seem to output IDs per curve like the original did (id_XP), does interactive Xgen not generate IDs? If it does, then how do you export them? We may have to do this our self but we wanted to be sure.
