Selecting the curve in the viewport, won't select the curve in the outliner

Students always seem to find new ways of breaking Maya and rigs, but this one has me stumped on the "Twigs" character rig.

In the original rig file (first image), as expected, selecting the curve/controller for the finger in the viewport, shows to be selected in the outliner, therefore bringing up its keyable attributes.

In the broken file (second image), selecting the curve controller in the viewport, for some reason no longer selects itself in the outliner; therefore the keyable attributes won't show up.  This is only the case for 2 of the 12 finger controllers.  How was this broken??

(originally thought it was hidden attributes, hence opening up the Channel Controller)

It looks like when you're clicking it in the viewport it's selecting the shape node or components instead of the transform node. My best guess is that maybe this option got set to component instead of object by mistake at some point?

Sorry for the delayed response;

Unfortunately it doesn't look to be the case, it's still set to 'select by Object Type' / 'Objects'

You have the Shape selected and not the transform..

The animation channels for Translate . Rotate, Scale, vis (etc) are on the transform, not the shape

 (arrow up to get the transform )

Try checking if the control Transform is in a display layer or the controls shape is in a display layer that has been  hidden.

 with that shape selected , arrow up, and look at the channel box. if it's in a layer. you'll see it listed in the inputs.

Also, check the attribute editor. and see if a display override is set on the transform of the control

Up Arrow did the trick jumping to Transforms from the Shape, I wasn't aware of this.  I'll now just need to go through your suggestions of were it might be hidden or overridden, (doesn't seem to be display layers in this case).  Thanks a bunch!
