Help understanding the Loop tool in the Time Editor

I have a simple turning run animation I want to loop.  I add it to the Time Editor and go into its attributes and set it to Loop Progressive.  Next I grab the loop tool, pulling it to the right to extend it,  so far so good.  But when I click back on my timeline to scrub it, the Clip Loop After mode instantly changes from Loop Progressive back to Loop.  The same thing if I extend the clip forward for before.

What am I missing here?

Thanks!

I just noticed that when I extend the animation using the loop the first time, it throws an error:

// Error: file: D:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2020/scripts/others/showEditor.mel line 3567: TypeError: file D:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2020\Python\lib\site-packages\maya\internal\common\ae\matrix.py line 110: 'NoneType' object has no attribute '__getitem__' //

I've created more animation clips, it's always the same with each clip.  What am I missing?
