Weird smooth bind behaviour

Hi all, I downloaded a free humanoid model that I added a couple of finger joints to and now I'm trying to rebind the skin, but getting weird results all over. Even when using the default Smooth Bind options, the mesh only seems to be bound at the joint, and when I move parts of the body the bones just stretch (see screenshots). I tried playing around with the smooth bind settings (like dropoff), but the result is always the same. What am I doing wrong?

You're not supposed to translate joints like that. You should rotate them. The joint that is at the knee basically has the influence over the lower part of the foot. Rotate the knee joint and you'll get a more expected behaviour.

Look into some basic rigging to make a control setup for your skeleton.
