Legs not moving correctly

I have been following on a YouTube tutorial and the guy's character looked completely fine when he lifts the legs up. But when I move my own character's leg up, this happens.

 

Around the foot are the controllers which makes the legs move and I want the legs move up straight just like his character:

I'm not sure your process, but it could be that you set up the IK on the wrong joints or didn't hook it up.

I notice in the picture of your character, both legs move up. So my guess is you attached something in an incorrect spot.  

Sometimes I have issues with keeping symmetry activated by accident, so check for things like that too.

I emailed you about 5 days ago back with the fixed rig... main issue was the joints not being aligned properly and they were straight... I will attach the rig file here as well just in case you didn't receive it as of yet! (:
