Adaptive workpoint in cable and harness

Hello,

I wonder is there any option to make workpoint adaptive in cable and harness.

In brief, when I route a wire between two connectors, it will be a straight.

Next, I had created workpoint on wire, using 3D move/rotate option, I am able to see spline like wire.

But here the problem is, this workpoint is fixed, whenever I make change in length or position b/w connectors in wire, this workpoint remains fixed which results in improper positioning and  increase in length and curvature of wire.

Please find attached images for more info.

How to make it adaptive.

Please let me know

You edit the harness and add a point along the wire and in order for it to move with an object you need to redefine that point and pick another point.. Don't use an offset but select a point..

If its not a single point selected then it won't follow/adapt.. But if you pick a point it will adjust as that point is moved..

See video..

Hi there,

I'm up to Inventor 2021 (.2 I believe) and I wanted to check, by point, you mean on a solid? I've just tried to use a Workpoint created at the assembly level (2 connectors + wire level) and things don't update as in your video.

This seems like a silly workaround while I'm thinking of it, but it sounds like a cube shaped part could be added to the loom, use it to drive the routing of the wire but otherwise have it hidden in any non-Master views. Would it be a lot of coding to have it work with Workpoints as well?

To confirm, I have created a 50umx50umx50um cube and used it to drive the wire.

R-Click the wire (in the 3D view or in the Browser) and add a Point to the wire.

R-Click the Point (in the 3D view or in the Browser) and choose Redefine Point.

Then choose any corner of the cube (or any other point on a solid body part).

You can then constrain the cube in whichever way you like - I've just used the main assemblies coordinate system to drive some offsets like 50mm left, 10mm down and 20mm towards the screen and with each constraint, the wire moves.

Hi!
My solution is similar. I am working on an assembly that contains a cable & harness subassembly to make it adaptive I created the Work Points in a sketch located in Part Connectors . And when I created the Segments I used those Work Points as Wire Points .( example. I'm using half points from the first connector and other half from second connector. The Connector Parts can be adaptive)

Hope this help's
