Shell + Beam Elements Linear Static

Hello all,

 

I am doing a linear static analysis on a wing section comprising shells and beams. The shells are PLA 1mm thick and the beams are CFRP 2mm diameter. I've drawn sketches to represent the beams and used 'idealisations' to define cross section.

We've tested this wing in the shed (yes in the shed) and it fails at around 375N force with a max downward deflection of 22.5mm. However the FE model is not tying up with the shed results.

 

Any help anyone can offer me in this matter will be highly appreciated.

  1. What were the results of the analysis? Larger displacement? Smaller displacement? (Knowing that could provide some clues. The displacements are smaller which implies that the model is too stiff. Sometimes this occurs because the maximum activation distance on the contact is too large.)
  2. What have you done to eliminate (or at least minimize) the 79000 warnings? According to this article, the 76000 T2217 warnings are significant: T2217 warning with manual edge to surface contact involving shells in Nastran. The fatal error T2221 also indicates that the results should not be used.
  3. I think that many of the faces are not connected together, but I cannot explain why the model stays together. There is not enough contact defined between all of the pieces, and the mesh is not continuous. 
  4. There may also be an issue with the imported model. I see that the mesh is not following the edge of some of the pieces. See the image below.
  5. If it were me, I would either import the model differently so that it is not a "composite", or create it in Inventor. Either way, I would split all of the faces so that the edges on the one piece match the edge on the adjacent piece. For example, the skin of the wing should be split into 10 lengths to correspond with the 11 ribs.
