Query Display Issue with Shell von Mises Stress

I have a flat plate modelled with shell elements that is constrained and loaded. I'm interested in the maximum von Mises stress values on either side of the plate and the stress distribution patterns so am using the "Shell von Mises Stress" display option. When I use "Query Display" (nodes) to identify stress values it will only display values for one side of the plate. For example if I "Query Display" for a corner node whilst looking at the plate from above the probe will display say 10MPa (random number). If I then do the same whilst looking at the plate from below it will still display 10MPa even if it is clearly higher or lower than 10MPa on this side from the contours. The results the probes pick up on (either those for the top or bottom side) depend on the direction the normals are oriented in.

Simply, is there a way to use "Shell von Mises Stress" so that when I use "Query Display" (nodes) I get the values for the top side when I'm viewing from above and values for the bottom side when I'm viewing from below?

Cheers

Tom

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm not sure what you are referring to.  When I query the results with the probe, I get both top and bottom stress reported when I have Shell Von Mises Stress selected.

Hi James,

That's really interesting, because when I query display I get the results shown in the first two pictures below. Results are only given for node 6619 for the bottom surface of the blade.

Cheers

I guess @Anonymous is talking about "Node Query Display"

and @KubliJ about "Probes".

Exactly Michael, would be useful if there was an node version of the "probes" in the Results tab as currently these only display element values.

Hi @Anonymous

I agree that the "Nodes > Query Display" should give the values for the top and bottom of the shell.

Just to be clear, the "Results > Probes" command from the ribbon is using the same results from the nodes and displaying the values. The difference is that the "Results > Probes" command will interpolate the results from the nodes over the face of the element, and that is why the probe shows an Element number instead of a Node number.
