Probing section

It appears when probing a surface that results from creating a section view, it's really not probing that surface but whatever is invisible in the foreground. Tell me it isn't so. In the attached screenshot the probe is showing 25,246.5 psi. This would put it in the red-orange band but it's in the blue band which means the stress is under 2,500 psi.

If I turn sectioning off, the arrow is pointing at a red-orange area.

 

This is terrible! I'm finding more and more things like this that used to work in Sim Mech, (which I gave up because you are discontinuing it) and now don't. Surely this will be fixed soon. Yes?

 

And since I'm on my high horse, in Sim Mech you could isolate components without having to mess with sectioning. For instance, I would have a bracket sitting on a plate. I could turn off the bracket and see the stress contour on the plate showing me how the bracket was pushing on it. In the case of the attached file, this is a lifting lug by the way, I would like to just isolate one cheek plate. Yes, I could do it using section view but right click > Isolate is a heck of a lot easier.

 

These should both probably be enhancement suggestions but it seems to me I shouldn't have to suggest stuff that Sim Mech used to have.

Hi @rlkillian

 

Sorry for the frustration that you are experiencing with In-CAD. I agree with your observation that the probe is not recognizing that the model is sectioned (sliced), and therefore it is reporting the results from the portion of the model that is "hidden".

 

Regarding the hiding of parts, you can choose which parts to display in a contour by editing the contour, clicking the "Part View" tab, and choosing which parts to display. Although implemented differently than Sim Mech, the functionality is practically the same. (You edit the contour by right-clicking on the active contour in the model tree, or by clicking on "Results > Options" in the ribbon.)

 

P.S. I opened a model in Sim Mech (a transient heat transfer) to check the probe feature on a sliced (sectioned) model. The Sim Mech probe worked a little better, but not 100% correct. It was displaying temperatures from the sectioned face over a portion of the section, but it was also displaying results from some nodes in the background. Smiley Sad

Thanks for the reply, John, and thanks for creating a service ticket. Hopefully they will fix this very soon. And yet another thanks for clueing me in on how to hide parts. I didn't even notice the tab that says "Part View". For what it's worth, the Sim Mech way of doing this seemed much more intuitive to me.

Hi,

 

All I can say is that this issue is in the backlog. It is hard to predict when it will be put on the active schedule.

 

The developers are currently working on higher priority bugs as well as some new functionality. Stay tuned to the "read me" and "What's New" documents when versoin 2019.2 is released (currently scheduled for later this fall).

I too have just run into this problem. although you can use the scale to associate color with a value, when we write reports at work, we like to be able to give an exact value along with a screenshot of the probe with that value. some people do not like to read between the lines and guess what the value is from the color. since the probe still grabs geometry associated with the invisible part, you can not get values based on the insides of solids. I seem to remember that this option is pretty simple in the CFD software. it is especially bad when you are looking normal to the section plane, and cannot see that you are not selecting the actual point on the plane, but instead some random point elsewhere on the model.

I agree, comparing a color with a swatch is not sufficient for a real engineering report. Internal stress probes are a fundamental and essential part of real engineering analysis. There is a hack that involved splitting a part in sections, creating an assembly, and bonding, but this is cumbersome and only works for one section plane at a time. Engineers often need to check many planes of many components in different load cases under time constraints. Surface probing and color matching is not sufficient.
