Defining the material properties of the honeycomb core

I want to do Linear Steady-State Heat Transfer Analysis to the honeycomb sandwich construction (HSC).

 

I think the honeycomb core is 3D Orthotropic material, so I think the material properties of the honeycomb core are different from that of the material of honeycomb core. I don't know the material properties of the honeycomb core.

I plan to use Aluminum 7075.

What should I do define the material properties of the honeycomb core?

Hi @Anonymous 

 

I do not know if HSC is something in the Nastran software, or if that is a standard industry term. But I will get to that later.

 

For the thermal conductivity, I assume that you are using solids in your analysis so that you can specify the thermal conductivity in 3 directions. (Shells and laminates only conduct heat in 2 dimensions.) So I assume that you have a solid block for the core and you want to enter the thermal conductivity to simulate the honeycomb. Here are some ideas:

  • Find a research paper or text book that describes how to calculate the conductivity based on the dimensions and properties of the honeycomb.
  • If a standard construction, maybe the supplier has conductivity data.
  • Perform a test to measure the conductivity.
  • Create a model of the honeycomb in full detail and analyze the heat transfer. Compare that result to a solid block and adjust the conductivity as needed to give the equivalent result.
