Updated Text Editor (CONTINUED)

Updated Text Editor (CONTINUED)

The previously submitted idea to updated the text editor has been marked as "Implemented" even though only one tiny piece of the idea was actually implemented. Shame on you Autodesk...

In order to get these ideas back on the table (and vent my current frustrations) I'm creating a new thread. Anyone who would like to see other things, please add it to the comments of this thread and let's see if we can get Autodesk to notice.

The text editor in Inventor is still not letting us customize as much as we need... I'm ok with using the Text Editor Window as opposed to in-place editing, but really, it needs work. Here is my main concern:

  1. Numbering (yes, I'm using it now) is a complete nightmare in Inventor... Example: When creating notes, my company finds it more aesthetically pleasing to add a blank line in between each numbered item. This makes each item easy to distinguish individually. Right now the numbered lists in Inventor work the same as the text editor here on the ideastation website...
  2. Notice how there's no space between these items? Notice how this item blends in with the one above? Yea, fix it... Like it's fixed in Au**CAD (name omitted to discourage trolls).
  3. See what I mean? It all begins to run together and you can't really tell where one things stops and another begins. I'm actually just typing things to drive the point home by showing how if you add more text it only gets worse...

However, let's see how this looks!

1. I turned off numbering and I'm now just adding the numbers in manually. Right now, I'm trying to get to a break point so that the text moves down to... OH there it goes.

2. Now, notice how the second line of that text (hanging indent) goes back to the start of the line? That looks messy and wrong and it's going to get marked up every time by my project manager...

3. At least each item is easy to distinguish though... Manually inputting numbers is a real pain though...

Suggestions:

Give us control over hanging indents.

Give us the option to continue numbering after a break.

Also, the line breaks in the text editor do not line up with the line breaks shown graphically on the drawing screen. Not sure if that's a bug or just you just missed it.

Examples of what's going on:

Numbering 1.JPG

Numbering 2.JPG

Kudos please if you agree with this... I could really use the help.

Thanks!

We use Inventor for over 15 years in or company.

We also do lots of documentation stuff with inventor.

What's missing is a full featured text editor:

- Giving different passages of a text different colors

- Not only control line height but also distances between paragraphs.

- Differentiate between new line and new paragraph

- Having the ability for text indents

- Subscript und superscript

- User interface improvements (maybe an extra toolbar instead of a separate editor window)

- Ability to make non printable character visible and invisible

We really would appreciate some improvements with the text editor.

Autodesk, you guys are missing out if you miss this one.

Hello @Kyle.Arnold

I understand your frustration...

Don't forget spell check. (everyone makes a typo now and again)

Even the comment box for this web site has it. ;D

I was going to post this as an idea separately.  But came across this thread and thought I would add the idea to this thread.

Can we get Overscore or Overline %%O to work in Inventor as it does in the 2D version?

Just some thoughts.

Cheers,

Jamie

Area of interest: Text editor within the 2D environment of Inventor.

I've recently upgraded to inventor 2017 (from 2014) and welcome the auto-numbering option that is now available but it is very limited compared to it's AutoCAD sister.
The one function that I think is missing is that there isn't an option for auto-spacing between the numbers, bullets etc.
This is a common standard with producing notes within the engineering community and request that it is added as an option.

Example:

Default Auto-numbering:

1. This is a test.

2. This is a test.

3. This is a test. etc. etc

Preferred numbering style:

1. This is a test.

2. This is a test.

3. This is a test. etc. etc.

Please note:

I have noted that if you use the Auto-numbering as it is then add the spaces afterwards it will give the required appearance BUT
if you then edit the text all the numbers turn to "1" i.e.:

1. This is a test

1. This is a test

1. This is a test. etc. etc.

Which makes using the Auto-numbering as it stands impractical, and again I request that this is looked at.

Regards

Paul

@Anonymous, this exact request has already been made. It's the first result when you search for "text". The title isn't very descriptive, but sometimes it just takes a few clicks to make sure you're not posting a duplicate. Please consider voting for the original to help get your suggestion recognized: Updated Text Editor (CONTINUED).

Thanks DRoam.
I had looked around for similar but hadn't used TEXT on it's own as a search criteria.

I'm going to take it a step further!

Try to add a sub-set of A. B. C.!

You get:

1.  Text Text Text

A. Text Text

B. Text Text

C. Text Text

1.  Text Text Text

What is even worse; if you fat-finger the numbers in, Inventor recognizes them and turns them into auto-numbers!  So the next time you go to edit the text, your typed in numbers all revert back to 1.

I attempted to create an indented numbered list yesterday, ie:

1.

    a.

    b.

2.

etc.....

This is how lists with sub-lists are commonly created around the world, and can be done in just about every text editor or word processing program since the late 80's.... except in Inventor.  I ended up creating the list in Word, and going old school with an OLE object on my drawing like I was still using Inventor 9 or something.

Please make this a priority, it's a perfect JDI project for someone on your team with too much time on their hands.  Smiley LOL

Alright Autodesk... apart from adding spell check, we still don't have an updated interface for text editing... Can we get some love over here?!?

Agree with the above posts about indented lists. Needed just like in every other text editor

Approaching 200 votes for Text Editor improvements and we are still waiting for many of the requests.

I know there have been some implementations, but many more to go (IMO).

Have to agree with all of this.  Just tried adding bulleted lists with sub-items, and.......  it's not available.  This is such a simple, yet incredibly-useful feature that just about any text editor (aside from Notepad) has already implemented.  Why?  Why is this not a feature after so many years?

Tab formatting inside editor does not match resulting tab formatting in drawing.

In the editor, CTRL+TAB was used to indent the text (no user control of distance though).

The text was aligned in the editor.

During editing and after closing the editor, the text on the drawing sheet was not aligned.

I tested various fonts with similar results - unreliable formatting results.

Workarounds = add/remove tabs and watch for text alignment on the sheet, not in the editor.

So, 7 years on now, and they still haven't addressed this? I presume we should just give up hope? Does anyone have any good workarounds? Generate what you want in Word and do a copy-paste plain text?

We really need improvements to the Text Editor.

also copy and paste of numbered items is broken, replacing it with plain text, which I need to delete and reactivate the numbering.
