Update Task scheduler

Update Task scheduler

Taks Scheduler is massively outdated. Every time we update to a new Inventor version, I start the migration process, and it´s taking weeks.!

First og all the TS is not happy about too large folders, and some times just stops without telling why, it seems like it´s still running, but when you check the log, nothing has happend for several hours.

Because of this one will have to select smaller portions of a folder hierarchy, to slowly work through the main folder. it´s some real tedious detectective work. Here it would be nice if one could pick several folders in one go, but only 1 folder can be selected in each addition to the task. (we have several thousand folders)

Because this job takes so long one will have to keep an updated list over the folders, and tick each folder as it has been migrated.

If only Task scheduler could be running in the background grinding slowly away on the files, in a stable pace, i would propably be able to migrate in half the time, and then all files would actually be migrated.

Im sure Task Scheduler could work way better if it were prioritzed.!

In general. I think i speak on behalf of most Inventor users when i say, stop making new things and make the things work, that are already there.!

I totally agree, we're in the middle of this painful process also, again.

When you say migrating.  Your talking migrate every Inventor file (ipt, iam, idw, ipn)?  For what it's worth we've been on Inventor and Vault since day one of Inventor (R1) and utilize Vault Professional and Items and Change Orders and never do a mass migration.  We only migrate files when they're being revised.

Same as MikeH, I've never seen the point of mass migration.

We migrate files as we edit them, if we don't edit them they just stay as they are.

I should add that we're working in small to medium assemblies, in terms of parts count.

It probably makes more sense for those working on large models, and would certainly cut down on the time taken to open and save massive assemblies.

@mikeh4 &  @Rory_M  unfortunately we don't have the luxury of migrating on the go. We use a third party DMS, that for now requires migration to work properly.

@LSA-skan We've been fortunate in that we don't need them but in your case case then you absolutely have no choice.

Autodesk really do need to make sure that the migration tools and batch processing methods are robust. I honestly can't recall the last time the task scheduler was changed or improved.

I fully agree. Autodesk migration tooling (Task Scheduler) is outdated. It takes weeks to finish this job. And stability needs to be improved.

I may be one of the people who use Design Assistant and Task Scheduler

You have to be careful using DA - but it works, there are nice things to make it work easier like create a link from the current project to the new project location as part of the workspace BEFORE opening DA

TS- does work, but you do not get a lot of feedback

I have used it to print out a lot of files from a project without my interference.

It opened them and printed them out-just to make they were upto date-there may have been some changes to parts which were not reflected in the sub assemblies.

I would avoid if possible massive migration - I have a few thousand project files

Like others have said, if you dont need to update then that will save you lots of headaches.

Our IT dept recently created a Mapped drive with a shortcut and we have in the last couple of years placed the Content Centre on a network available drive - while this has saved us lots of headaches with the recent projects - it means sorting out all the locations in the older project files each time the files are migrated.  That is a lot of headaches and time wasting. - Finding the right part, CC part, FG part etc etc

However, I tried to create dxfs, and print to file pdfs from idws-using a print driver(and I think STPs from FG parts) - no dice.

TS is a bit confusing regarding its interface, but once it is running correctly - it goes well.

Thanks for your reply. i agree TS works, but you have to be carefull and diciplined. Can't just start and forget. i haven't used DA in many years.

you should look into VBA/iLogic to do your print jobs. it will save you a lot of time 🙂 we have a thirdparty tool for DXFs, but im sure one could find a VBA/iLogic code for that as well..!

This could have saving a lot of migration time

Many issues with setting up the Tasks to migrate from Vault.  Things like:

  1. the select from Vault dialog (files and folders) is not resizable and is too small
  2. the select from Vault does not remember the last location used
  3. you cannot select multiple folders! You need to add individuals one at a time!
  4. there is no searching when selecting files
  5. it is painfully slow to select files from folders with a lot of files
  6. the Task Scheduler constantly steals the focus, meaning you have to run it on a system and just leave it.

I will say that when I ran TS 2022 on some vaulted files, it was more stabile than in TS 2020.  It seemed to not randomly fail.  Seemed to run faster as well.

If you doesn't  make mass migration you can't use design assistant, because your models YES updated automatically when you save them, but drawing NOT !

I don't understand why to do design assistant need to make migration first 😞

For information, we have about million of the models and drawings (23 years of the work) and for mass migration use external application makes especial for us. With Task Scheduler impossible to work at all, it crashed every time.

But with our app we make a mass migration about to 1-2 weeks
