Thread Direction support in Content Center - Left Hand LH

Thread Direction support in Content Center - Left Hand LH

I would like to have thread direction support in content center as it happens in iPart tables. This would allow to author families where also left-hand thread members are present.

[WHY IS THIS NEEDED]

Not many CAD Admins use author Inventor Content Center families, but as soon as you will start doing it, your guys will begin asking you any possible member variation within this wonderful tool, and their productivity will increase dramatically. Because of a limitation in the Content Center module documented in this AKN article, currently it is NOT possible to control the thread direction from the family table in the Content Center. This means that the thread direction of the family template will remain unchanged, whatever you try to do.

[RELATED ISSUES]

The thread direction implementation and documentation is currently not really optimal as it is documented also in this other related idea, which is already around 70 votes:

separate LH thread information from thread class - ISO 15786 compliance

Maybe it is time for Autodesk to react to this need and address this limitation.

[CURRENT (NOT REALLY ACCEPTABLE) WORKAROUND]

It is very frustrating having to author a custom family with left-hand thread for handling this limitation, as most of such families will probably contain as much as 5 or 10 members. This could be perfectly handled from the primary family, if the thread direction could be controlled from the family table.

If you need this feature, please cast votes to this idea and also to the other related one.

Thank you!!

Clearly the beginning was "Not many CAD Admins use to author..."

sorry for my typo, the system does not allow me to correct it 😊

This idea is needed to improve more. I'm looking forward to this.

Hello to all,

what do you guys think about the split the CC libraries (Folder!) language depending? I have trouble to organize/use CC at our various subsidiaries (China, States, Germany, India). OK all english talking areas using english but we use German language so I get golders like EN-en and DE-de that contain the same parts (geometrically) except the description.

My plan is to switch to english in general but have no idea where and how to set the language. Sure I'm able to set the language in CC itself but need to do that while installing or importing via Application options import (xml).

Any ideas/suggestions?

@guido_overath

this means that this idea linked down here is right for you!!

Lock Content Center Language

There is quite much discussion around this topic, but for sure the most efficient strategy is NOT the one chosen "by default" by Autodesk. Unfortunately the developer that has done that thing many years ago has now left Autodesk, and now "we don't know why he has done it that way" (this was an innocent admission of another Autodesk ContentCenter guru that I will not report here for obvious reasons 😁 )

My content center has about a quarter of million parts, all of them with normalized description in 8 different languages (including German, Russian and Chinese) and does not need to create one different ipt file per each different language... but that is just my choice.

I don't have Indian language, but I could easily implement it if needed...

Hello

I think it could be solved by iLogic.

- CC template could have paramater Thread_Direction

- CC family table could have column Thread_Direction mapped to Thread_Direction template paramater

- CC template could have simple iLogic rule + trigger On Before Save that set thread direction

Feature.InventorFeature("Thread").ThreadInfo.RightHanded = False / True (based on Thread_Direction paramater value supplied by Content Center)

@jan_priban

Well, I have been thinking for a while how to answer to this suggestion. Then I realized that my answer "in public" could potentially be non politically correct, so I decided not to answer.

If anybody out there will attempt the iLogic way, be sure to validate what you do VERY carefully in a test system (and also try to migrate the family between 2 releases before you say "yep, that is my solution" 😉 )

I have been asking Autodesk for this for over a decade.

Hello all,

let me inform you we (Autodesk) are working on possibility to map thread direction in Content Center in these days. Functionality will be available. The INVGEN-43486 is "In Progress" state now

@jan_priban

this is an excellent news for us. Please, if possible, post here an info when the feature will be ready for testing in the Alpha/Beta channel. We all have a quite tight schedule, and it is not always easy to find the time to invest into Inventor Alpha, but if I know that one of such ideas is being implemented, then I will find the time!!

Hi Massimo @freesbee , all

I am (we are) not allowed to say when functionality will be available for testing / use = I am not allowed to share Inventor version where it will be available , sorry, our internal rule.

This has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2024. Please review the Inventor 2024 What's New article here. For more information regarding how you may leverage the feature, and please review this page. Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.

Hello,

@Yijiang.Cai

I tried implementing this in my Custom Content Center, but when mapping the column to the Thread Direction parameter, it states "Inconsistent Type Mapping: The Column type does not match the parameter/property type."

What Column type should be used for this situation? It currently is set as a "String" with the text Right Hand or Left Hand per member.

Please advise, it does not state any types in the link you provided (What's new 2024).

thanks, Mark

Hi,

I think column riding thread direction should be type of Boolean. True = right thread, False = left thread

Hi Jan,

That worked, thanks! I only had to mention 1=RH and 0=LH in the column header to reflect this in the window when inserting a CC part. Bit cumbersome, but it works.

Thanks, Mark
