Split face in assembly

Split face in assembly

Hi,

I can split face in part environment. But it is not possible in assembly.

We need it sometimes to aply the surface direct to assembly/weldment. Because the parts are firstly assembled/weldet und than they are lacquered with multiple colours.

I would like to be able to split surfaces at the assembly level for performing stress simulations.  That way, part files themselves are unaffected.

 

This would be nice because I could then change the color of split surfaces to indicate constraints or loads, but they wouldn't show up on the prints of individual parts.

Can you add the split command to the assembly environment as well as the part environment?  It becomes useful to create an isolated area on a surface to assign a force or constraint to when doing an FEA on a complex frame.  Currently I have to derive the assembly into an ipt in order to create the isolated areas on a surface that I need.  Below shows several rectangles that have been split out of a derived ipt in order to select those surfaces to apply forces to in a FEA.

Being able to chose a plane for splitting inside the simulation environment. Inventor splits the included components and constrains them with a sliding but no seperation. This would simplify the use of symetrical characterisitcs to reduce computation. Spliting and constraining multiple times (3 could totally constrain the model). Angle relationship of planes other than right angles (it has six identical lobes, array)

Great idea!

 

We model many painted parts from welded assemblies. Often we have to avoid painting certain regions of the part.

 

inventor doesn't have a workflow to allow you to do it! How are people managing?

 

Further to your idea, why not open up all the part modelling toolkit in assembly environment. If you work on machining castings, then you have to do a lot of modelling in the assembly environment! We don't even have project cut edges! Smiley Sad

If painting is needed, we currently have to do that in the part environment. I would like to have the split command in the assembly environment to create splits in order to locate constraints and forces more accurately on assemblies for FEA analysis.

I do a lot of work with specimen testing from provided material, e.g. pipes, elbows, other various pieces.  In order to test material properties from these components, I create models and then drawings of the parts to show orientations and where the specimens need to come from.  This process results in assemblies and images of how things are laid out.  My problem is that for more complex geometries, such as 5 specimen types from an elbow that need to be lined up in a particular fashion, I need to provide step by step cutting processes in order to make sure the specimens are not being compromised.  It worked out in the past for hardness testing certain planes of an elbow to split the part as a visual representation of how I wanted the part cut, so I would like to be able to do the same process for an assembly, where I can slice my main material down in steps to show how I want the specimens laid out and what will be the best way to do this.  I don't want to create multiple assemblies with various extrusions taken out, as that would result in creating way too many files to have to deal with for some projects.  It would also help with showing the customers how we will be slicing up the material they provide.

Definitely needed for FEA purposes. Splitting the surfaces from within the parts is not an option because parts may be reused throughout the assembly so adding a split to one area of the assembly results in various unwanted splits throughout the assembly where there are additional instances of that part.

Is it an option to define the face colors at the part level?

Sometimes. But not all the time in our case, because we paint the assembly/weldment after assembling. Not as separate parts. And sometimes the same part has a different color in different assemblies. And sometimes it has no color change.

Yes, I am aware of this. 

But there are at least 2 drawbacks from my point of view:

1. We have a lot of old released parts in Vault and they will need to be set to WIP and revisioned.

2. We will see the line in the part drawing and we will need to hide it.

@MartinSaradin  could you explain the use case, you have here? 

  • visualization (3D model)
  • Painting-directives (in a manner of drawings),
  • calculate the coating (paint quantities)?
  • something else...?

Depending on the needs there might be different options to solve the problem.

Another practical use case involves separating surfaces on assemblies that are to be painted. Certain surfaces must remain free of paint (and are masked off prior to painting).
It would be beneficial here if users could utilize the "Split" function from the part environment.
