Spline length

Spline length

Hello,

A few of our customers need to specify spline length while sketching. Dimension command only specifies the width and height, not the spline length. Is it possible to add a command to help with that? It helps to create a more suitable surface for the sheet metals. Thanks.

Kind regards

We can measure the loop length of a spline or 3D path with the measurement tool, but no way to put that in a dimension. Many times we need to route a wire of a specific length and must set loops or curves to take up the slack.  It's very tedious to adjust some parameter and go back to the 3D sketch to measure the loop length.

If this could be done it would also be useful to be able to constrain the length of a spline (so we could tie the endpoints, set the length and adjust the path to accomodate).

Ability to dimensions this also in drawings

I was asked recently if this was possible and was advised through the Inventor General Forum that it would be worth posting here.

The idea would be the ability to give a spline a total length dimension that would be maintained no matter where the pick points lay. I get that there would be limitations but I think it could be a useful addition to the software.

Thanks,

completely agree with both the skecth and drawing ability.

This would be very useful. I see that this hasn't been talked about in years. I am wondering if it stalled out, of if there are limitations based on the complex math involved with a spline and how it is currently programmed in the software? Also I have come up with additional scenarios applications where this would be useful both is drawing and modeling. 1. I oftentimes am presented with this same cabling/ hose flexible hose length problem. 2. I have a known length of steel rod that needs to be bent along a spline shape. Where arcs don't work well because it needs to remain tangent to a pre-defined strait element thus requiring a complex series of planes and 3d sketches with tangent arcs for a sweep operation. 3. Say you have a known base diameter and want to produce an arched shape where the circumference needs to stay inline with the base diameter (not an ellipse). I have defined points for width and height and a height to the spring line (height at which width is at max) of this squashed circle. The only way I have found to do this can do this so far is with a series of tangent arc's which doesn't work well when changing sizes as the tangencies have a tendency to want and turn themselves. I hope this idea hasn't died, because I could see it being extremely useful.

This would also be extremely useful for us for hydraulic hose routing. A quick Google search indicated that it is available in Max. It has also been available in Solidworks starting with 2014. http://blogs.solidworks.com/solidworksblog/2013/09/new-in-solidworks-2014-fixed-length-spline.html

This would come in very handy in a 2D sketch and 3D sketch environment. To be able to type in a length of say 20 ft. So that way one could place in a 20ft section of tubing on a spline length to find out how many sections they need. Would of came in very handy a few years ago for a truss system we were doing.

Extremely useful for designing systems that use flexible hoses, wires and cables, etc.

@Anonymous @Anonymous @dvsmiller9,

It looks also very similar to the idea @ https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/the-length-of-flexible-hose-should-have-a-fix-setting/...

If it is true, some possible solutions for this idea are currently under discussion on the NDA based Inventor Feedback/Beta forums. If you would like to contribute/validate then please apply for access using this link:

this indeed need to be implemented. We need a "loop length" dimension that will automatically set a free dimension on the sketch to whatever it needs to be to meet the loop length.

Is it on the way to be implemented ?????? we need it now.

This tool exist for tube and pipe as Pipe length. Why not on a 2D/3D loop length in reference parameter only??? Many customers need this on their BOM as parameter length. The workaround to have a parameter and formula to calculate the total length is too long.

I agree, being able to have a parameter with a loop measurement would be great for Tools > Documents Settings > Bills of materials > Base quantity.

It's essentially a dimension that can measure the loop same way that Measure Loop does it, then leave it as as Driven dimension for referencing in Parameter (FX).

Which software are you writing about @havva.simit

You chose a forum that is not or or about any software at all, so your post here is going nowhere, but it can be moved.

I would like to be able to dimension the length of a spline or bridge curve within a sketch.
