When you select show children only for a display preference in the the model browser it hides all the components in sub assemblies, but it leaves all the component patterns. I think this should hide everything underneath an assembly except maybe work features.
Actually this sounds like a bug Andrew. When I did Show Children Only (probably R2?) patterns didn't exist... it should NOT show anything below the instances of the edit target.
I just updated to 2020.2 and this is still not behaving as I would expect. In the screenshot below you can see that I have the show children only option checked but it is still showing the patterns underneath sub-assembly 543421:1.
