Sheet Formats

Sheet Formats

Sheet formats are very useful. For new clean drawings they work well. When it comes to changes, there are some QOL improvements that would be very helpful.

Short term improvement

Add the ability to edit a sheet format. It is very painful to have to delete and recreate a sheet format just to correct a typo in some notes, for example. A simple UI, right-click -> "Edit..." as is found on title blocks.

Medium term improvement

Make the sheet formats a self-contained layer or similar when a sheet is created, so they can be updated easily. Use case example: a multi-sheet drawing, each sheet using the same format. If an error is found, this can be updated in the sheet format and then all sheets updated to reflect the change. Similar to title blocks.

Long term improvement

Move the sheet formats into the styles library (possibly the title blocks as well). This would make adding to older drawings far more straightforward than copy+pasting from another drawing. Combined with the previous (medium term) suggestion, this would make updating title blocks very straightforward.

Rationale

We have many sheet formats with notes for different drawing types (part, assembly, weldment, and other specific ones) each with A2, A1 and A0 sizes. Plus we have about 20 years' of legacy drawings that are slowly being updated. Updating styles is a breeze, but updating notes and title blocks is more long winded as you need a blank file open to copy+paste from. Perhaps this is an edge case, but I figure at least the "short term" improvement would be useful to all.

Definitely would improve workflow for my company as well. I just recently overheard coworkers talking about needing to change a title block and having to ask about how to do it. We use customer title blocks as well as our own, which makes for regular changes.

I think drawings could use the most improvement out of all the environments, at least of those I use.

May I also suggest that when creating a new drawing and the user selects a sheet format, the new drawing should contain ONE sheet.

Currently, as of 2022, you get the default sheet plus the sheet format. Now the default sheet has to be deleted by the user, either manually or with automation.

WHY do we have to do this extra step. Why can't we just make a drawing with the selected sheet format and the result is a single sheet?

I like sheet formats.

I have separate sheet format set up for assembly and parts drawings.

It would be really useful if I could have the sheet format remember the style selected for a BoM added to a sheet format (I have one parts list style for a parts bom and a different one for an assembly bom).

Also second the "delete default sheet" comments above. it's time consuming!
