Pierce Constraint

Pierce Constraint

It would be great if Inventor had a pierce constraint, like in Solidworks.  Many people say that using project and a coincident constraint is the same, but that's only partially true.  The pierce constraint is really telling your sketch geometry to connect to the intersection point of your sketch plane and your target geometry (that you would project).  The problem with a simple projection is that it doesn't give you an intersection point, only a piece of geometry with end points (see picture "projected geometry.png").  The current work around is to first create a construction point by clicking on your sketch plane and your target geometry ("construction point.png") and then connect your sketch geometry to that point ("connected to construction point.png").  See the attached pictures.  The pierce constraint would eliminate the need for the construction point and for any geometry projection.

Could you please add "Pierce Constraintpierce.png" to connected point to line with different sketch. as attached for example

Hi Novly, Could you explain what the difference is between a pierce constraint and coincident?

Hi Paul, The Result it would be the same with coincident constraint, but we need to project geomatry first. I hope Inventor dont need to project geometry first to get relation, add dimension, offset edge. Here also I put kudos for enhancement;

I really wish this would get implemented.  The problem with projecting/coincident constraint is that projecting geometry, like a spline, does not give you the intersection of your sketch plane to that geometry; only an arbitrary line (or spline, or whatever) and endpoints.  The goal with pierce is to be able to constrain your sketch geometry to the intersection of your sketch plane and the object in question.

@inv.ideareview, please remove this from the archive; it is a very needed constraint in Inventor!

They won't do anything that SW does lol.

I would really like this function added, yes. Have been searching what the simplest way was to obtain the pierce relation, but the conclusion is that inventor just lets you do the work and leaves you stuck with a bunch of annoying workpoints.

I have to agree.

The "pierce" constraint is much needed.

Imagine for instance: A line in a 3D-sketch is used to control a feature. This line passes thru a series of parallel planes, each with a sketch in need for a constraint to the 3D-sketch-line.

For this, a "pierce" command would be nice, i.e. the very point where the 3D-sketch-line is passing thru the plane.

2024 still no pierce constrain nor transparent text in drawing space that has only been requested since 2007.

Hope open-source will put autodesk out of business, it is a burden to work with this software.

It's incredible they dare promote new features every year that only fix minor bugs and ask money for it.

Pierce constraint necessary please add!

10 years after this thread was created, you guys still can't be bother to add a constraint that SOLIDWORKS added at least 15 years ago. I wish my company would switch to SOLIDWORKS.

Ya but they took the word MaStEr out of the software so it's safe to use for us now 😄
