Parts List Filter Settings

Parts List Filter Settings

Within Autodesk Inventor 2017 you can now use visibility QTY within the partslist.

I don't know when or why you want to use that, but theirs one thing I'm more consurn of and that is you can't see that you have used a Filter for QTY depending on a view representation.

Opening the Parts List, you don't see the use of View representation incl. QTY of Visible Parts.

Opening the Filter Settings, you see the use of a View Representation, but not the use of the QTY depending on visible parts.

After Editing the View Representation you finally see the setting.

This is not accepted!!!!

Make a recognized image in the browser or something.

Yes.. This could be improved (but what new feature couldn't)..

My suggestion is to automatically add a footnote to the bottom of the parts list and the footnote number next to each and every quantity that has been limited by that limit qty checkbox..

Like this..

I used an asterisk vs a more "proper" footnote symbology

But do you really want to clutter up your sheet with an asterisk? or some other text?

In your example Mcgyvr would you want to see every QTY that was affected by the filter have * or just * the column header? i.e. "Beware some of your QTY are filtered"?

Or is a simple funnel/filter icon in the browser enough (and probalby put some indication on the PL dialog itself to match?

I agree maybe we missed this detail when we added this.

I am one that will probably be using this feature a significant amount when my company upgrades.  I would not want something like what mcgyver shows, unless we would have the ability to edit the text of the note.

When we use this feature, it is because we are breaking down an assembly into drawings of multiple phases (ex. Engine Installation, Hydraulics Assembly, etc.), spread across multiple drawings because it is too cluttered to be clear in a single one. We normally add a note in these cases indicating that the parts list shown is for that phase only, and not comprehensive.  If we could customize the note, it could become an automatic version of that warning note that we already add manually.

I don't think we would want the asterix notation at all.  In our case, the full parts list is shown somewhere else on a seperate document for ordering purposes, so it isn't important to us to note on the drawing exactly which components are having their quantities filtered.

All,

See how quickly a simple addition like this gets complicated? 🙂

So to satisfy jtylerbc and mcgyvr I need an option "Display QTY override warnings" and/or an edit box to customize the warning text!

Also something to consider, if this warning is part of the PL table definition what happens if I split the PL and put a child table on another sheet? Does the warning appear with each child table too? What if that child table does not have any "filtered" QTY? Still put the warning just in case?

The kudo count is rising and we agree that we need to do something here but finding the right solution for all will need some more input, please keep the comments coming.

Hi Steven,

Maybe you can color the tekst line into a RED color or something.

Override by hand it becomes BLUE but you see that their is something going on.

Marco,

I have been doing UI programming for > 25 years now and I HATE using color for something like this.

20% of males are color blind to some degree, what if the color we choose doesn't stand out against your sheet color, etc.

Sometimes I lose the argument with our UX designers but I try never to use color for this type of information.

Haha, true.  Well, we can't make it too easy for you, we wouldn't want you to get bored.

To be clear, I really don't need the automatic note at all, especially if there was something in the UI to warn the Inventor user as to what was going on (icon in the browser, indication in the parts list).  It is simply that if there is going to be an automatic warning, I would want to be able to customize the text to replace a note that I otherwise would have added myself anyway.  From that standpoint, the ability to just totally shut off the quantity override warning note would be almost as good.

If I don't have one of those options, then I have your note (which I don't really need and may even confuse our fabricators) taking up some space, and then still have to add my normal warning note.

Could there just be a little filter icon next to the Parst List, with the option to print or not? Something like this:

Parts List Filter Icon.png

And within the Parts List editor, maybe an icon that a filter is active, like this:

Parts List Filter Active.png

This might be a litte more complicated, but there could also be a filter icon in the far left of the QTY field for all of the items whose quantity has been affected by a filter. Again, with the option to print or not.

We do use the QTY filter by VR.  It would be nice to have some sort of automatic indication that the filter is applied.  I think the indication needs to be shown somewhere in the "Edit Parts List" dialog. I don't like the idea of "Automatically" placing some editable text on the idw if the PL is filtered.

Hopefully, this idea will be reconsidered in the near future.

We use this quantity zero filter for documentation of our iAssembly members, as the specific member brings in all BOM items of the factory, with non-applicable items set to a quantity of zero. We would NOT want an automatic note that a filter is on as it would raise red flags on every iAssembly parts list. If it's an iAssembly, maybe flag it to not throw a warning.
