Panel Settings for Model State On Off Supress in BOM and Automatic Renumber
It would be useful to add these options to any settings panel. Model State On/Off Supress in BOM and Automatic Renumber. Please see the pictures. If you like it, please vote. Thank you.
I think it should even be default behavour that suppressed parts in a Model State would not be present in the BOM, and i am very supprised it isn't. The presence of the suppressed items in de BOM undermines the most important advantage of the Model State functionalities. It's nice to be able to suppress components, but the BOM is still pretty much unusable now.
I noticed this behavour in the Release Candidate, but i thought this was a bug.
I'm unconfortable advising Inventor users to use Model States if they cannot use it in a production environment, because the BOM is 'incorrect' (at least it's a lot of work to edit an exported BOM in Excel and delete all the unused items).
The Model States are propagated to the BOM and also to parts list on drawings. However, components which are suppressed in a certain Model State, still appear in the parts list. Only the count is set to zero.
If I want to make them disappear completely I have to edit the list and hide the lines manually.
I would like to have a filter option or a check box to “Hide all positions with count 0”.
@dusan.naus.trz Thanks for your feedback, it's in our backlog for sure.
@NiekSmitsICN Would like to clarify, the suppressed component will not participate in BOM, today, it will show in the list with zero in quantity, its properties will not be calculated, while its item number is preserved. This idea is to request an option to renumber item numbering.
@jingyi.liuExporting the BOM to excel for other departments in a company happens very often (like @RajSchmidt also says). It's nice that the quantity is zero, and the mass will propably not be calculated, but when exporting to Excel the BOM will be a mess. It will not be usable without deleting the unused items manually.
A very common workflow (which i performed myself and i hear from my customers) is as followed:
- Exporting the Structured BOM for Assembly department to collect items for assembling a project.
- Exporting the Parts Only BOM for Purchase department to purchase all items for a project.
Looking at the screenshot in the original post, @dusan.naus.trz also means not to show the zero-value items (see the red cross) and wants that the remaining items will be renumbered (@dusan.naus.trz correct me if i'm wrong). I didn't want to create a double post, so i responded at this one. I'm happy to make another post if that is more clear, but from my point of view it's te same as this one.
I was shocked to discover that suppressed parts still show up actively in the BoM, even worse, I get parts in my BoM (with quantities and with zero quantities) out of different model states?! This is absolutely ridiculous. Why would anyone ever want zero quantities in a BoM or let alone suppressed parts to show up? I have never had this much work using SW trying to get a BoM to show the correct items that are active on the drawing.
Please fix this functionality, it renders model states useless as is. I cant trust my BoM to show the correct info. Not a big fan on automatic renumbering also, some of us change order to get a structered oversight on the drawing. If numbers change without warning, you will not know something changed. The manual renumber function does everything I personally need.
Edit: apparently the issue with the different model state parts showing up happens when applying a filter to the BoM for the Assembly View Representation, where it somehow does not consider the model state that is active?
- I agree that automatic renumbering would not always be desirable like you said. The manual renumbering is fine. My wish mainly includes the hiding of the zero-valued items.
- I didn't notice the problem of incorrect bom items when filtering, perhaps this is a bug.
I agree with most of the above comments. My product assemblies contain the different options and variations of our product line. Trying to output the BOM for a specific product to an ERP system is ridiculously difficult if the unused parts and sub-assemblies are always included, even when they're 0. Although I can see where using the 0 to eliminate such items would make programming this requested feature simple. The BOM should not list, include or calculate any parts that are suppressed in the Model State, period. I was kind of counting on that when I started building our product models. Boy was I wrong. I can see where automatic renumbering could cause issues. So, no auto numbering for me. So, how long before we see some action on this front? Our ERP is going live in a couple of months.
Hello, but don't be angry, as this thing could have gone into a sharp version, it doesn't make sense. Don't you have anyone on the team to design these things for you?
This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2023. Please review the help content here, to learn how to leverage the new "Hide Suppressed Components in BOM" and "Renumber Items Sequentially" BOM settings. Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.
