Option to save user settings globally instead of locally?

Option to save user settings globally instead of locally?

In other CAD systems (e.g. EPLAN), it is possible to save user and company settings and sometimes also station settings (it is unclear how useful this is) by default globally on a network resource (e.g. a mapped drive by policies or a full server path).
The paths for this are mostly already set during installation through parameters.

As a result, a user can work with any station as if it is their own and without having to make any settings more than once. The same settings (if configured) are retrieved from the network resource when the application is started and are directly available after startup without any manual intervention.

An other advantage is that settings are not lost when working in a pool of workstations or when replacing a machine.

In addition, for some CAD systems it is possible to provide default settings for all users globally via a default profile as a starting point for setting up personal settings.

And in some cases even to distribute changes to these standard stettings to effect all users.

I would like to see such a feature in Inventor.

This portion of your request is already possible, though maybe not exactly in the form you would prefer.  You can export settings out of the Application Options dialog box, and export UI customizations (ribbon, keyboard, Marking Menu settings) by a similar Export method in the Customize dialog box.

So you would set up one machine with your "default" settings, export these files, and store them somewhere accessible to all users.  On the receiving machines, they would then be imported.

@jtylerbcThanks for the information!
I knew about this, but this also requires manual intervention on each station.
What I am suggesting would mean:

  • Install Inventor via software distribution.
  • New user starts the first time and gets the suggested custom default settings.
  • No manual intervention required by an admin or keyuser.

My idea aims on being able to manage the system without extra manual intervention from admins / key users.
That's also why the settings are saved on the network. This is not only convenient for the user, it also means less work for the admins / key users.
E.g. a IT contractor can replace the PC, install the software from the distribution and the workstation is ready again.

Yes, I understand that what you are asking for here is above and beyond what the current system does.  But I pointed it out anyway in case you didn't know about it already, as it could have been an improvement over however you are managing it currently.

Thank you, I understand that. You can't know what level of knowledge I have.
And of course, with the current possibilities you can achieve a certain degree of automation with the help of scripts, but interventions not intended by the system sometimes lead to unexpected side effects.
I think it could be useful for many, hence my request here.

Maybe you can support my request?
