Object/Visble lines should first selection over Construction or center lines

Object/Visble lines should first selection over Construction or center lines

When I create a construction line to be as a guide for my object line (they overlay each other in parallel but have different lengths) The problem/inconvenience occurs when I try to select the object line to dimension, delete or apply constraints; the longer (Typically the construction line) line gets chosen first. Yes, I can hover over the line to choose what is below, but shouldn’t by default the visible/object line be the first pick. That would be great if you implemented this with future inventor programs.

Thank you,

See also this this similar idea, addressing the same sort of problem, but in terms of object size rather than construction geometry.

I could see these working together to form a selection priority hierarchy, along with the additional suggestion from my comment in the linked idea.  Something like:

  1. Object In Sketch before Object Outside of Sketch (Model edge, etc.)
  2. "Real" Sketch Geometry before Construction Sketch Geometry
  3. Smaller before Larger

Something like this could make it much easier to select the object you wanted the first time.  Ultimately this means you spend less time fiddling around in the "Select Other" list, and more time actually designing your part.

YES. I especially agree with your "Object In Sketch before Object Outside of Sketch (Model edge, etc.)" one, I hate when I try to constrain to a projected sketch line and Inventor tries to select the model edge instead.

I think the hierarchy you've described would be perfect and make things much easier.

FOR SCIENCE'S SAKE, PLEASE IMPLEMENT THIS!!!!!

Wanted to offer a small refinement to jtyler's hierarchy suggestion.

In order of selection priority (1 is first priority):

  1. Native non-construction sketch objects
  2. Native construction sketch objects
  3. Projected non-construction sketch objects
  4. Projected construction sketch objects
  5. Objects behind sketch (model edge, etc.)
  6. Within each level: smaller before larger

Basically all I added is that projected objects are prioritized below non-projected ones. I think that's an important distinction for the selection algorithm to make.

That makes sense to me as well.

This is an obvious bug that was supposed to have been fixed in 2016, then 2018.
