Not Allowing Dimensions to be Centered

Not Allowing Dimensions to be Centered

For whatever reason i come across this way to often and it causes issues with fitting all my dims where I need them to go. The dimension that has more space to be centered wont allow me to center it.

If 2 7/8" is enough to fit between the lines, why isn't 4"?

@Anonymous, this is simply because there's not enough room for the 4 AND the arrows inside that space. This is also true for the 2 7/8" dimension, but for that one you can draw the arrowheads pointing inward from the outside, because there's enough room above the 2 7/8" dimension to do that. And indeed this is what Inventor did. You could do the same for the 4" dimension as well, but then the lower arrowhead would clash with the "2 7/8" text. Inventor recognized this and so it didn't put the 4" arrowheads on the outside, and so it can't fit the 4 in the middle. But you could possibly adjust your Dimension Style to enable it to do so.

Right-click your dimension, go to "Edit Dimension Style", go to the "Display" tab, and in the diagram reduce the "C: Gap" dimension to something small enough that you can fit both the "4" and the arrows in that space. This will probably give the result you want.

For situations where there's simply not enough room for both the text and the arrows, even with zero gap between the arrows and the text, but you still want to center the dimension, you can manually force what Inventor did to the 2 7/8" dimension. Right-click the 4" dimension, hover over "Options", and uncheck "Arrowheads inside". This will move the arrowheads outside which will give you room to bring the 4 in. As I said above, this isn't really an option in the situation in your screenshot because the lower arrow for the 4 will clash with the "2 7/8" text. But in other situations it will work.

Your last option, if you want both dimensions to look consistent, would be this: right-click one of them, hover over "Options", and check "Leader". Drag the text out to the left. Repeat for the other dimension. Make sure "Arrowheads inside" is checked ON for both dimensions. This will give you about as consistent a look as you can get with those sizes of dimensions.

Inventor can already do what you need. You just need to know what options are available to you.

This replay makes me wish I could give comments kudos. Thank you very much. I've messed around with those options some but not in that aspect. Didn't think of that to would fix my issue. Thank you very much!

My pleasure, glad it worked for you!

One note, in case you ever try to do this: in testing out the third option I mentioned, Inventor didn't want to bring the arrowheads inside for the 2 7/8" dimension even though there's enough space for both of them. It seems Inventor wants there to be some minimum amount of space between the arrowheads. So in order to make them fit, I had to go into the Display settings of the Dimension Style and reduce the arrowhead length (X dimension) by a small amount. Just wanted to point that out in case you ever try the leader option.

Best of luck!
