Integration with Cura

Integration with Cura

Dear community,

I'm Thomas Karl Pietrowski, maintainer of the SolidWorks plugin for Cura. I heard from some people, that they would also like to have such a plugin like I already developed also for Autodesk products. However, I don't know how many people actually need such a plugin, but it would be great if you could reply if you are interested.

What the plugin does is converting an foreign file, here SolidWorks parts and assemblies, then calls the CAD application invisibly via COM API and converts the file automatically. No need to care about exporting the latest revision of your design. This way your design file is the only file you need to care about - no STLs or 3MFs for you anymore.

If you are familiar with Inventor, how it works and really want to have such a plugin, shout it out and give examples how to connect to the COM API (if there is something like that). Also if you think this is a good initiative advertise me at Autodesk to sponsor me with a (minimal) license, so I can maintain and develop this plugin.

Thanks!

- Thomas Karl Pietrowski

Thanks! Currently I'm facing an issue connecting to the COM API.

Could you please test, whether the 3 lines of code work on your computer?

Please give feedback on the thread mentioned above.

Thanks!

Good news guys. A basic, working script is there and makes STLs out of ipt and iam files.

Now only work is left to convert it into an plugin!

First release is out. Yes, you can directly open Inventor files (parts, assemblies, drawings) in Cura.

Thank you for the thumbs up!

Together with the help from someone else at the Ultimaker forums, I managed to get something working:
