I use the Replace Model Reference command in IDW all the time. Great feature.
But I find the menu a bit of a pain. I have to select the view, then go into the RMR window and find the view (ref) to replace. Some IDW's may have 50 to 100 views of difference .iam models, and you can't expand the RMR window so lots of scrolling. Not easy.
Just add RMR to the right-click menu of a view and jump straight to browser to find the file you wish to replace with.
Thanks for finding that article as I figured someone else would have the same request.
In my case I'm trying to correct neglected rookie file management mistakes from ages ago before migrating from Inventor 2016 to 2017. I'm testing out my reorganization on old simple projects before I make a complete mess out of recently completed and current projects.
I gotcha. Based on specifically what you're trying to do, there are workarounds in regards to replacing model references that can speed up/make up for clunky or missing functionality. For example:
Using Design Assistant rather than "Replace Model Reference".
Using the brute-force-and-ignorance method of moving a currently-referenced model's file somewhere where Inventor won't find it, opening the drawing, and using the "Resolve file" dialog to choose the new file to reference.
If you need to replace a referenced file only in a few specific sheets of a Drawing, you can select them, copy them to a NEW drawing, delete the sheets you copied from the ORIGINAL drawing, go back to the NEW drawing and replace the references, then copy the sheets back to the ORIGINAL drawing
Definitely none of these are great. But there's a chance they could be faster for you.
Thanks for the additional suggestions beyond 'Replace Model Reference;' but as you noted, none of these are great solutions either. So now that I'm aware of 'Replace Model Reference' that is the least painful method for my needs.
I think it would make more sense to replace/repath a model in a drawing via the 'view properties' dialog box than switch to a different ribbon tab.
Agreed 🙂 I'd highly recommend voting on the original of this Idea if you'd like for this to be recognized and addressed by Autodesk, as the other one has been around longer and has a decent number of votes behind it. You can vote for it here: Replace Model Reference per base view.
I was about to post to idea forum, but see other people have had same idea.
I fully support it and give my vote.

We’re archiving this Idea because it's been on the board for well over a year and hasn't received many votes from the community. If you want to raise it again and try to gain more support, you're welcome to do so.
I would like to raise this idea back up. It is a great idea. The fact that, in Inventor Pro 2019, we still can't simply change the component referenced for a specific drawing view, is awful. That isn't user friendly. I'd like to also point out the SolidWorks has had this since at least 2014. Yet another reason I will likely be switching.
