I want a slot hole command

I want a slot hole command

There are times when you want to constrain assembly at the center of the slot hole (long hole).

As a countermeasure, we use the sketch of the slot hole to create the center axis (working axis) and constrain it to the axis.

I would like to develop a command that can create a slot hole, like a hole command, so that you can easily recognize the center of the slot hole.

You could call out the slot direction by choosing an axis (horizontal or vertical), and then specifying a rotation (default would be 0).

omg, I used Solid Edge in the last two years but now i changed my employer and use inventor. i was happy ... at first. after realizing that there ist no ability to place a screw in the centre of a slot. In Solid Edge 8 and maybe longer, its solved since years!

I was shocked that this function is missing in inventor ! its like working in the middle age!

With countersunk option as well.

Well , now we do it by extrude (cut)

Create a slot base on sketch points. This could be a hole type just like "Simple Hole" and "Clearance Hole". You would have the options to adjust length and width as well as orientation.

This would be especially nice when you want to change a feature from a clearance hole to a slot, it would only take a quick edit instead of deleting a feature and creating a cut extrude where a hole feature used to be.

Solidworks has been doing this sense 2014.

Good idea but I prefer creating custom hole library anyway. Because, maximum times, I cant find my exact size hole in the default library. I had to create my custom hole anyway.

Would be helpful for hole tables.

I like this idea. It would also be nice if, within the .idw environment, an ordinate dimension could be placed at the middle of a slot.

Hi @TYoung_Combi, here's a related idea for that: Center Mark for slots in drawings.

Also have a dimension tool for slots.

I support this idea because this is something that can REALLY help other default built in tools that needs attention. All these workarounds you guys suggest only dampens our effort to help fix the underlining issue. And that's giving a standard tool more ability to function as a CAD software should. We shouldn't have to rely on workarounds to do our jobs. A big benefit to adding this feature would be to the thread dimension command & hole table, which is used in drafting standards to display types and sizes but currently doesn't detect slots. Or even punched holes that have a profile like a square or rectangle.
Hole table tool is limited in it's ability to work by only detecting the hole command & circle extrusions.

And if you want the hole table to detect other things, including punch shapes. You have to go through a long drawn out convoluted process that makes most of my engineers roll their eyes and give me a look of, seriously? And even then it's extremely unstable with updates to the components breaking links and having to sometimes even delete the features and start all over again. (We have 10-80 holes at a time with different shapes and sizes / locations.)

(Trying to write this without coming off too harsh here... Trying to raise an point that this stuff is needed though.)

Anyways, sometimes these O.P. topics seems to be simple things that have actual steps to make them work... But a lot of times these simple ideas have a lot of need that are inter-woven issues with workarounds that make everyone assume that everything is working fine and therefore no one suggests or votes on the ideas presented here. So please help support and share these types of things with your fellow drafters when you can. Thank you. 🙂

bring back the slotted hole in the hole feature that was around in 2007

Why is using the Hole command to build a slot better than than using the existing Slot primitive in a sketch and an Extrude?

Hello Autodesk... *Knock, Knock, knock**.... are you listening to the users? Why hasn't this been implemented yet? I would find this functionality much more useful than the "laser etching" functionality you are trying to implement... can you re-assign resources to the little things which will be WAAAY more helpful on a daily basis to save time, and the our companies money. Not to say that laser etching isn't important to some, but I am sure small functionality like this post may be more generally appreciated - stop making more things to have more problems - fix the ones people are asking for...

Definitely voted... and ashamed that they haven't done anything about this the last number of years. ugh.

@swaltonI could see a use case where it interacts with the same tables as the hole command. Though I would still want to make my own sketch in advance to locate start and endpoints of my slot and either an arc or straight line between, just based on my experience with the auto generated sketches that exist currently with the hole command. For example if I'm making a slot for a 3/8" Socket Head Cap Screw and need it to be flush/below flush and want 1" of adjustment it could pick out the counterbore info and appropriate diameter for the slot automatically. Then if I later decide it actually only needs to be a 1/4" screw, it'd be as simple as changing a single drop down field vs adjusting the slot and counterbore diameter and counterbore depth.

2nd this, Autodesk please add this function.

Benefit of this idea: You can use the hole tool to allow calculate clearance. Plus it'll help with automated Hole Tables.

Last week a similar idea 'HOLE TO SLOT; SLOT TO HOLE COMMAND' was posted by @gtweed. Hopefully the developers will finally hear us. A feature like this would be really helpful!
