Finding a Sketch Reference

Finding a Sketch Reference

Finding referenced sketches from other parts (or assemblies) is difficult and time consuming.

There is no simple way of finding which part the sketch is being referenced to.

Idea Proposal:

A) A link directly to the file or

B) a pop-up showing the path to where the file is located (locally or in Vault)

C) It could show a "ghost" or image of the parent part, with a link to open that file or

D) the name of the part and link to search for it in vault

E) any other useful idea

The usability should be simple - as easy as when you right-click a sketch geometry, and select "find in browser".

Inspiration for this idea came from here:

I've compiled this idea with the help of other members, kudos to them.

I would like to repair/replace broken references without breaking the sketch, too.

This is an absolute must have.

Please implement this, it's going to be so useful.

I would like to see the same with constraints, finding the mating contraint..

This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2017. The browser node verbosity and icons have been updated to better reflect the types of relationships that exist within a cross-part reference within an assembly. The occurrence path mapping of a selected node can also be reviewed (via a tooltip) by hovering over any icon within the browser. Lastly references can be opened individually by right clicking on the browser entry and selecting "Open References" or "Open Parent Assembly" if invoked from a part file possessing the reference. Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.

Interesting behavior discovered with the reference geometry.

Given: New Inventor 2017 Assembly with three new parts. Part B references part A. Part C references part B.

  1. Open part C containing reference geometry.
  2. Right-click reference geometry and select Open References. Part B opens.
  3. Return to part C.
  4. Right-click the same reference geometry and select Open Parent Assembly. The parent assembly fails to open for me.
  5. Close part B.
  6. Return to part C. Try Open Parent Assembly again and this time it works.

Why can't you open the parent assembly if you have opened a "References" part?

Ideally, this functionality would be more helpful by being able to select the feature of the part, or part itself, and be able to open parent assembly without having to dig into the tree that extra layer/two to find that specific feature being adaptive. It would be nice to be able to open the reference parent assembly even if part is used in an alternate assembly that adaptive reference not used in.

I have 2022, it does not work. I can click [open parent assembly] or [Open references] but nothing opens, no errors, literally nothing happens.

Why can't you just give me the path to the linked file?
