Enable Treating Top-Level Assembly as a Single Item in BOM

Enable Treating Top-Level Assembly as a Single Item in BOM

Current behavior:
In Autodesk Inventor, the "Inseparable" BOM structure can only be applied to subassemblies.
It cannot be assigned to the top-level assembly.

Problem:
When creating fabrication drawings for welded structures (e.g., brackets made of multiple plates),
we often want to treat the entire assembly as a single item in the parts list.

However, currently:
- The top-level assembly is always expanded into individual components (e.g., Plate A, Plate B)
- There is no way to show only the main assembly (e.g., "Bracket") as a single item in the BOM
- As a workaround, users must create an additional dummy subassembly layer, which complicates file structure and management

This leads to:
- Increased modeling complexity
- Reduced clarity in BOM management
- Inefficient workflows, especially in fabrication and welding design

Proposed improvement:
Allow the top-level assembly to be assigned an "Inseparable" BOM structure,
so that it can be treated as a single item in drawings and parts lists without requiring an extra subassembly.

Benefit:
- Simplifies weldment and fabrication workflows
- Reduces unnecessary assembly nesting
- Improves BOM readability and consistency
- Aligns with real-world manufacturing practices (treating welded structures as one unit)

Use case:
A bracket assembly consisting of multiple plates should appear as a single item ("Bracket") in the drawing BOM,
instead of listing all internal plates.

This improvement would significantly enhance productivity for fabrication and mechanical design users.
※This is a common requirement in real-world fabrication workflows.

I think we have a similar problem where we have a final product that is assembled of multiple sub-assemblies which themselves have even further sub-assemblies.

So the management has different ideas for a first level BOM for the final product which includes the following levels for the final product:

- SubProduct1, SubProduct2, SubProductx, Connection Set

- SubProduct1, SubProduct2, SubProductx, Bolts nuts Washers etc. from the connection sets

- Weld Assemblies from SubProduct1 (/2/x), norm parts used for Assembly of SubProduct1 (/2/x), Bolts nuts Washers etc. from the connection sets

So basically I would like to have a BOM where I can choose different depths of assemblies that are included.

Thank you for your input. I see your point about needing control over BOM depth, which is also an important limitation.

In my case, the main issue is slightly different:
I want the option to treat the top-level assembly itself as a single item (like an "Inseparable" structure), especially for welded or fabricated products.

Currently, even at the top level, the assembly is always broken down into individual components in the BOM, and there is no way to present it as one unit without adding an extra subassembly workaround.

However, I think both issues are related in the sense that Inventor’s BOM lacks flexibility in controlling how assembly structures are represented.

Ideally, it would be very helpful if users could:
- Treat assemblies as a single item when needed (Inseparable at top level)
- Control how deep the BOM expands (depth control)

This would greatly improve workflows for both fabrication and complex assembly management.
I believe this is a common need across many users.
