Convert text to sketch geometry command needed

Convert text to sketch geometry command needed

For the sanity of CNC Cut File producers, a fundamental change in the way the text is exported throughout Inventor is needed... or I suspect a lower overhead approach would be a ’convert text to sketch geometry’ tool would suffice. It would only need to support single line fonts.

That would then deal with the arc aligned text problem, which you can't currently export at all via the IDW > AutoCAD DWG method. Multi-outline font (Normal fonts) requirements can currently be achieved using the emboss tool, which is only appropriate for decorative font machining.

This could then be automated as part of the Flat Pattern Export idea @BLHDrafting has submitted here

Currently HSMWorks for SolidWorks can engrave single line text... the workflow to achieve a similar result in Inventor is far too convoluted. Having a decent solution for this in Inventor is long overdue and now blatantly obvious with the advent of Inventor HSM.

I need to add a couple of extra points here. The resulting text geometry should probably be placed inside a sketch block, one block for each text box converted.

A nice addition would be a 'sticky' option to choose the colour of all the geometry elements abotu to be converted. Colours can then be used to drive all sorts of things in AutoCAD and 3rd Party CAM software... or automation with:

API support would also be truly epic.

So this idea was written long time ago, is there any news about this?

It just recently got accepted. But that doesn't mean it will end up in the product any time soon.

@scottmoyse

Scott not sure if you do this or not now..

Just wanted to add to this idea in case someone wants to engrave text via HSM Express in Inventor right now/wasn't aware of the trick..

I simply create a sketch/text on the surface where I want and use the "simplex" font..

Then go into HSM and start a "trace" operation..select your engraving tool and then select your text for the geometry/curve selection..

Now the trick.. Go into the "Passes" tab and check "Stock to Leave" and make radial 0 and axial a negative number (as deep as you want your engrave to be)..

And you get this.. Works perfect..

Yeah that method works nicely in some situations.

This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2017.3. Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.

With no way to automate this, it's useless for assemblies with hundreds of sketch/text labeled parts. A simple checkbox option for export or a default that stops ignoring text during "Include Sketch" exports would suffice. Users report failure to use iLogic for this. Not even Fusion 360 which used to be called Inventor Fusion retains text when importing an Inventor part file with text-on-a-sketch.

This is fundamental entry level functionality left purposefully crippled. Clearly Autodesk wants people to migrate to Fusion 360 so they are simply punishing Inventor users. This would take a developer fifteen minutes of work to have included during sketch-included exports. Just convert any text in sketches to geometry and you're done. It is brazenly insulting to offer a solution after nearly a decade that is a merely a manual single part command.
