I've wished this many times but passed it off as impossible. But now that another user has mentioned it... it sounds pretty fantastic. This is one of the biggest limitations of multibody modeling--the fact that you really can't account for the geometry of standard shapes (such as steel members, pipe fittings, etc.) because there's no way to place those precisely where they should go in the "part".
The ability to constrain derived bodies to existing geometry in a multibody would remove that limitation and make multibody parts much more powerful and versatile.
You can use the Snap To option with the Direct Edit to do this a lot better than previously available with the Move Bodies command. Might be nice to seperate this command and call it something just for MultiBodies. Or make it work a little better than it is now. For example, once you get it where you want, it doesn't "lock" into that position. Thats what assemblies are for 🙂
After attemping to use direct edit for this it is clear that it is not up to the task other than rudimentary manipulation of solid bodies. Being able to use constraints similar to the assembly environment would be a far more powerful tool.
I saw tutorials in Solidworks where bodies in part file behave and can get constraint as in an assembly.
The only solution I'm using now is to make an assembly, then derive it in a part file and suppress the link. But it's not ideal for my application, I just wish moving bodies in Inventor would be at least half as good as in Solidworks.
"Snap To" option in Inventor does not accomplish what assembly mating constraints would do. Take a look at how assembly mates are used easily and quickly in multi body SolidWorks part files for reference.
Over the years I have used both solidworks and solidedge, and both give the opportunity to bind bodies in multybody parts. This possibility would not require the use of assemblies which would not actually be needed except for an INVENTOR limit. I sincerely hope they introduce it
