constrain derived parts to new origin

constrain derived parts to new origin

i am deriving/modifying a single solid body (part) from a multi-body part (really a large assembly from a STP file). When deriving, the origin is carried over from the larger multi-body part. i would like to constrain my derived part to my new default origin planes. currently i would have to constantly measure, rotate, and move the part to the origin to get my desired orientation for sketches/views. the origin from the larger file does not work for this single part i'm working on, it makes sketches difficult to work with. Adding a new custom UCS will not fix the issue

@Anonymous, have you tried using the Direct Edit tool (i.e. Direct) under the 3D Model tab --> Modify panel, and used the "Snap To" option to "constrain" your Part to the origin planes?

I just tried, but the "snap to" command will not let you pick an origin work plane.

Good suggestion though

It does, my guess is your part isn't aligned yet. Is the face you're trying to snap to the origin plane parallel with it? If not you'll need to use the Direct Edit "Rotate" snap first, and then you can use the Move snap.

Also make sure and click "Locate" after clicking your solid so you can choose which face you're snapping.

The face/pane not being parallel was the issue, I was finally able to rotate/move my part to the desired origin.

Thanks for the help! Much faster than what I was originally doing. Still seems a little drawn out for something relatively simple

Glad it speeds things up for you! I agree it's a little clumsy. Here's a couple other ideas you can vote on to either make Direct Edit a little more streamlined, or even someday-maybe-someday put actual constraints in the Part environment:
