Change icon of fully constraint parts in assembly

Change icon of fully constraint parts in assembly

I hate to say it, but SolidWorks has different icons in the browser for fully constraint parts and parts that has some degrees of freedom left...

I would like to have that also within Inventor.

It is a usefull feature and (ex-) SolidWorks engineers ak me all the time, how in Inventor, they can easily see, if a part is fully constraint.

The "Degrees of Freedom" feature doesn't work with large assemblies. It would be nice, if you can see it in the browser.

See a suggestion how it can look in the attachment.

Are you aware of the "Degrees of Freedom" function located on the view tab (visibility section)?

It will show an icon next to any parts that aren't "fully constrained"..

Not to mention you do not need to 100% constrain everything.. Things like screws,etc... can be allowed to "spin" and not cause any problems with model integrity.

Hi Jimmy,

The solution mcgyvr gives shows immediately all degree of freedom.
A other way you can do it is by using Degree of Freedom Analysis.

Here you can see on each part if it has a translation or rotation degree of freedom.

You have also can the possibility to animate the degrees of freedom on each part.

I am aware of degrees of freedom and the degrees of freedom analysis. I'm just suggesting adding a little icon as a 'heads up' Just a quick visual cue, instead of having to navigate to a different tab and turning degrees of freedom on. I also asked my solidCAD instructor about having degrees of freedom on as default, and it is not an option, so I have a shortcut key to turn degrees of freedom on.

I'm just looking for ways to help cut down on mouse movement and performing extra steps, when I could just look at my model browser and know that something is not fully constrained.

I mean, they have an icon/visual cue for grounded components, suppressed components, components that are not enabled, components with their visibility turned off, adaptive components, contact set, why stop at components that are not fully constrained?

Would be better the the constrained view function

I have recently moved from Solid Edge to Inventor and, although mostly I'm impressed, not being able to identify whether a part or sub-assembly is fully constrained from the browser is a pain. The Degree of Freedom view is not immediately clear as to which part/sub-assembly is under-constrained.

Would Autodesk be able to comment on when a solution for this is likely to be implemented?

Thanks

It would be wonderful if there was some kind of indication in the Model Browser that parts in an assembly are fully constrained.

This has been available in both SolidWorks, and Solid Edge for some time.

What do you make of the degrees of freedom indicators? Are they helpful?

Those are all right, but I like having a small icon next to each part in the model browser that gives me an instant indication of whether a part is fully constrained or not.

I think it's a good idea - like the pin showed when a sketch is fully constrained.

I've been using the product for three years and never noticed that pin! It's tiny...

Lol,

I'm pretty sure that the fully constrained sketch pin has only been in the product since 2016 😉

Would a push pin icon showing that a part is fully constrained be confused with the existing push pin icon which means that the part is grounded?

"Would a push pin icon showing that a part is fully constrained be confused with the existing push pin icon which means that the part is grounded?"

I was thinking something more along the lines of a red or green dot next tho the part name in the browser. Green indicating a fully constrained part, Red indicating a non-constrained part.

A quick and simple indication that is easily recognizable.

This is a duplicate topic. I vote it too again!!

Yes, I was locking for this in Inventor until I found out that it's not an option. Would be nice if the model in the tree had a sign like Solidworks.

This is a duplicate idea. Please go to the link above and kudo it.

This is accepted more then 2 years ago. I use Inventor 2017 but see no other icon in the browser. Is this not implemented or do I have to make a setting in the options?

Thanks!

Hi Crew,

I know there is different ways to find the degree of freedom and not fully constrained parts in the graphic view inside the Inventor,

But Its seems inventor has got nothing till know to distinguish between fully constrained parts and floating parts in the Model Browser list by the shape of their icons,

currently for example if one part is grounded, its icon in the model tree will change with same icon but a pin shape will appear on it (as you can see in below image)

But what about other parts if they are still not fully constrained in place and if they are fully locked by several relationships ?

I think its good to have different icons shapes for these two type of parts as well, to suddenly detect them in the model browser by one quick look and not confusing between hundred parts inside and outside of each other and lots of different arrows in the graphic area !

Thanks for thumbs up to apply this improvement in the future versions

I am also curious how long it will take to implement this long ago accepted idea!

Any news on this?

Until the browser is enhanced, the only other tool to use is the Degree of Freedom Analysis tool, available on the Assemble tab, Productivity panel.

Perhaps this could be an easier tool to update until the browser enhancements are decided.

My suggestions for DFA here:

Degree of Freedom Analysis dialog box enhancements

I agree with Jimmy. It's just nice to have an indicator in the model browser that tells you if a component is fully constrained or not for quick reference. I know sometimes you do not need a component to be fully constrained, but it's just nice to know whether it is or not just by glancing at the model browser.
