When rolling up (merging) BOM/Parts List items by Item Number (or Stock #), where there are dissimilar non-quantity values that appear in other columns, those other values are summarized by the legend *Varies*. In many cases, an enumerated list of those specific values within that single cell would be preferred -- as opposed to not rolling up that item at all.
This is of particular interest with the advent of "Instance Properties", where such property is listed in its own BOM/Parts List column. An example is attached, illustrating this with 4x like connectors, each of which has its specific REF Instance Property value. In this case, the BOM has enabled "Merge Rows on Part Number Match" as well as "Merge Instance Rows". The suggested feature would here replace REF="*Varies") with "JP1, JP2, JP3, JP4" in that same cell.
At a minimum, this could be done in the UI as an additional option in Part Number Row Merge Settings, e.g. "Enumerate Instances" (available when "Merge Instance Rows" is enabled, as above). That minimal scheme would apply to all "*Varies*" cells, but a more robust implementation would be a selectable list of available columns to which the enumeration-list option would apply. That latter would be preferred.
If Cable/Harness ever gets reworked to work with Instance Properties, this would likely be useful there as well.
(It would be sufficient if this were implemented at the drawing Parts List (e.g. for Structured BOM), but perhaps the internals would require implementation at the BOM instead, or as well.)
btw, this would more accurately meet the goal of this earlier idea, now marked as "Implemented" by Instance Properties: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/multiple-item-numbers-for-similar-parts-in-inventor-pa...
Also: yes, this info could be manually typed into the Parts List as a "static value", but then we could also use whiteout and a pencil, right?
