Assembly Constraint Rerouting After Component Replacement

Assembly Constraint Rerouting After Component Replacement

I would like the ability to re-route or redefine if you will, any and all constraints upon component substitution.

Current workflow:

You have ten components, all constrained to each other in some fashion. For arguments sake, let's say all nine components are mated to one common face on the tenth component. If you replace that one, with something not made from the same lineage, some or all of your constraints will fail. You can sift through your constraints one by one and redefine them, looking for a new home. You'll end up redefining 9 constraints to that one surface alone. With the Design Doctor, you'll have billyuns of clicks. With a right click, edit, you'll still have about 5 per constraint.

Proposed workflow:

Same scenario, except now instead of 'edit' we have a 'reroute constraint' menu pick or some similar context sensitive right click. In that dialog, you have a check box to 'reroute' all similar dependencies. So you edit/redefine/reroute the first constraint, and pick the new surface to replace the missing one. This will re-assign all constraints dependent on that face, to the new one you pick.

Our business constantly swap components in our assemblies, stock ones, for custom ones and vice versa. Even vendor 3D files with imported geometry, Inventor sees a particular face as a different ID sometimes. This would save a fair amount of time.

I know it won't work if more than one component is replaced, and both references are lost. But that being said, if 100 components all were tied to one face or feature, rerouting all missing references to that face to a new pick would be huge.

This appears to be a duplicate idea in functionality to this idea here going back several years. https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/assembly-component-replacement-and-fixing-broken-const...

Thanks for pointing that out Gregory,

I didn't find that post in a cursory search. That is exactly what I was looking for. I was trying to be brand neutral, as I tire of the 'my old CAD did this... blah blah blah'. But Pro/E (now Creo) is where I used the functionality for 10 or so years. And since they are both based on the Parasolid Kernel, seems like a no brainer to me.

I upvoted that one, since they're way ahead of me!
