Add re-orientation function to export from Inventor.

Add re-orientation function to export from Inventor.

Often when an import of an inventor model/assembly into another application is created the orientation is incorrect.
A re-orientation function would be awesome. Having pre-sets per application would also be a great bonus.

Good idea

Would be a great improvement...

@lune.riezebos what's the difference between Inventor and other applications on orientation? If you have the list info about the difference here, that would be much appreciated.

@Yijiang.Cai , the most common orientation difference I run into is between Inventor and AutoCAD.  I don't know if that's the specific application that the original poster was talking about, but it's an easy one for Autodesk to see without leaving their own product line.

When you transfer models between Inventor and AutoCAD, they turn 90°.  This is because in AutoCAD, the XY plane is the "Top" view, and in Inventor, the XY plane is the "Front" view.  Transferring models between the two programs matches the XY planes, not the names of the views.

@jtylerbc many thanks for the feedback! I think you are talking that the Z Up is for AutoCAD, and Y Up is for Inventor in Front view.

That's correct - I described it in terms of the planes instead of the axes, but we're talking about the same thing.

I don't know if that's the scenario that @lune.riezebos was thinking of when the idea was posted, but that's one example I know about where this orientation change happens.

I am aware of the AutoCAD issue, but in my line of work we import the native
Inventor files in many more programs, not just the Autodesk portfolio.
That is why I am looking for a flexible easy solution.

Yea Z should be up in Inventor IMO. The only times I've wanted Z not "up" is when designing a part for a CNC lathe where Z is the rotation axis of the part. Everything else should have Z pointing up. Even Fusion 360 has Z as up by default.

Status changed to: Implemented

This idea has been implemented within Autodesk Inventor 2026. Please review the Inventor 2026 What's New article here, for more information regarding how you can now configure the orientation of a .rvt export. We added a Coordinate System panel that includes UCS and Placement commands. With Placement you select the Inventor model orientation and insertion point that will align with the selected Revit location in the exported RVT file. The new command supports Revit versions 2023 and newer. Special thanks to everyone who cast a vote for it.
