True, but there is a good chance that it might meet the needs of someone who
needs this functionality today. There may be issues with this in his
company's workflows/standards, but most can be mitigated. For example, the
assembly could be given a phantom BOM structure so the SM part would be the
only item that appears in any BOM. The idea is that this weldment assembly
only has a single component instance, the SM box.

Yes, with some non-standard workflow. (IV11 for sure, don't have IV10 to
check if it works there also)
1. Create the SM part.
2. Place the part in a new Weldment assembly.
3. Use groove welds to close the gaps (see attached image)

Example: A sheet metal box which needs welded edges so there are no leaks.
