I am curious, does anyone know, what the percentage of Companies that use Vault (any level) is to the number of companies that just use Inventor?

Correct, so nothing I would say that is statistically significant.

What could this tell us?

What would the result be if this was asked for ie.

I had originally posed the question to see if there was a significan number of IV users that weren't using Vault versus not vault. We are looking to move to Vault (15 users and growing) but, if I found that 70% of users weren't on vault, I would reconsider moving to vault, as there are signifcant growing pains in moving to vault when you have 16 years of IV legacy data...

Would it be an idea to start a discussion about what those pain points are when working with Vault.

I can give you a few of ours!

Would this be helpful?

Hi! Let me chime in a little bit. I am not a Vault expert. I know very basic concepts and I have been involved in several Inventor/Vault related issues.

Most of mechanical CAD users face a never ending question, "How to manage the data?" By using a dedicated tool (on-premise PDM tool like Vault or cloud PDM tool). Or, by using Windows File Explorer?

The answer actually depends. You need to understand your need first and then explore the possible solutions (tools). Typically, a PDM system can do the following.

1) Back up files, store files and their versions on a server, and record the change.

2) Allow multiple users to access the files collaboratively; each user has certain pre-defined abilities and access control; there are admins to manage the data and the users.

3) Automate certain file managing tasks like updating properties, migration, reverting, finding where used, and so on.

4) Replicate files, delete files, and freeze files.

5) Extract properties and BOM data from CAD files.

6) View or print CAD data (not editing) without loading the CAD tool.

I believe Vault can do all of above and more. However, deploying Vault does not mean you won't have data issues. You need to pre-define your design process and the data flow. Make sure all users are familiar with the procedures. There has to be somebody watching over and making sure the process is adhered.

Equally important, you shall not assume Vault can perform CAD operations like changing design, updating models, editing design files, and saving files. Those are not things that Vault can do.

Many thanks!

I think Vault is great. It's still got a long way to go to improve it's user experience, but it does the job.

It does seem that a lot of companies feel the need to have a dedicated Vault administrator which can be a sticking point for smaller companies and I've also found that if the reseller or whoever doesn't do a good job of setting up Vault in the first place, it can soon lead to that company getting rid of it.

@SharkDesign

What version of Vault are you using?

Are you using advanced Skeleton Modelling in your design with more than a handful parts.

We use Skeleton Models that have 500.000 parts more or less related.

I am curious.

2020, hopefully going to 2022 this summer (if we get a summer)

Don't really use skeletons. Everybody seems to hate frame generator at our place.

We tend to use this method instead of skeletons.
