Use sketch driven pattern from a derived sketch

Has anyone been successful with this? I have a derived part in my new part and I've included some Sketches from the derived part. Can I use them in a Sketch Driven Pattern in the new part? So far it doesn't seem possible to me, but maybe I'm missing something.

Thank you!

I think you can, but you will need sketch points to use them. It worked for me (only for points from the derived part's sketch):

Make sure the sketch is visible. See attached.

I'm sorry I'm not getting it...

1. In Part1 I have a Sketch with various points.

2. I create a work point on the "first" point of the Sketch

3. I create a Sketch Driven pattern with point work features

(I'm not sure if steps 2 and 3 are needed and this is what you were mentioning but I use these patterns latter on at the assembly level).

4. In Part 2 I derive the Sketch from Part 1 and I derived all the work points too

5. In my case I created a cut extrusion in Part 2

6. Pattern this cut extrusion using the Sketch from Part 1 and work point. No success.

What would I be missing?

I can create a Sketch in Part 1, derive it in Part 2 then edit it from Part 2 and add points there on the points already existing. This I know works, but I would like to use this Pattern multiple times and would like to avoid duplicating the process.

Thanks again!

Hi! This is because the derived sketch points are default to regular sketch points (dot) as opposed to "center point (cross)." The Sketch Driven Pattern only takes center points. You may edit the derived sketch and select the derived points -> Format -> Center Point.

After that, the derived parts should be selectable for the Sketch Driven Pattern.

Many thanks!

In 2023.1.1, at least, it worked as you are hoping:

  • created a sketch in Part 1 with all the desired points toggled to center points
  • created Part 2, derived in Part 1 (sketch only), no modifications
  • created a work point on one of the sketch points
  • created a sketch-driven pattern using the derived sketch
  • work points appeared at all sketch points

I also tried it with a hole feature, same success.

What version of Inventor are you using?

Thank you each one! I got it to work, by editing the Sketch and Formatting the points the way Johnson was suggesting.

Just so nobody else has to knock their head on a wall... It wasn't working because I had "Link sketch formatting from source component" unselected in Derived Part -> Options.

So, the Dot vs Cross point that @johnsonshiue was mentioning wasn't carrying through, hence not working as you folks were showing.

It's amazing how once in a while you look for a forum post to a problem and figure out it was yourself who had posted that very issue some time ago 🙂
