Thumbnail view in IV 2018.

Hi guys,

There has been a few mentioning about the thumbnail views showing wrong orientation in recent past.  The suggestion had been made to change the default settings in Save tub to Active Window on Save. But it doesn't work for the most of the time.

If the model is based on Derived Components - every time the assembly is saved and closed - associated parts preview image turns into something different. But that's  half of the problem. Second part of it is that when Linking Parameters from another file - one cannot verify that the right file is picked by using Thumbnail  preview window. Just as it is shown on the attached image. The same is true for the Design Assistance! The preview window is blank! There couple of questions I would like to ask:

1. Can anyone verify the same behavior?

2. If Yes - is it Windows 10 related one or IV2018?

3. Is there any solution to rectify the problem? Apart of using a pencil and a piece of paper to track down the parts?

Thanks in advance,

Igor.

Hi Igor,

Thanks for your information. But unfortunately, this issue can not be reproduced on my side as you described with latest Inventor 2018 update.

Could you please record a video about this issue and provide related files to us for more investigation?

Btw, what's your Inventor version?

Here is my email, [email protected]. You can reach me by that. Thanks again.

Thanks,

-Rui

Hi Rui,

Thanks for looking into it, much appreciated!

In the attached set of files please do the following:

1. Open assembly 37-5ga.iam, Rebuild All --> Save --> Close.

2. In Open DB - click on that assembly.  The preview looks as expected.

3. Select Assemly1.iam and open it. To start with - you will get a message that there were some changes made to the assembly components. What changes??? Anyway - accept the DB and open the assembly.

4. Rebuild All --> Save --> Close Assembly1. iam

5. In Open DB select the 37-5ga.iam file. Preview is rotated and shows whatever but not the active window on save.  If you deal with Design Assistance - the thumbnail image is not available. Nor that image is available from the iProperties DB when linking parameters from the file and want to verify that you are selecting the correct one.

I hope - I have provided enough information for the case. Please let me know if you need some more.

Kind Regards,

Igor.

Thanks, Rui;

Yes, it seems from your video - the preview holds. The background color changes but.  It is not, however a problem.

Just out of curiosity - if, after all the manipulations you create a new file, open Parameters DB, select "Link Parameters", navigate to the 37-5ga.iam, right click on it, select iProperties --> Thumbnail. Do you get an image of the file?

Thanks,

Igor.

Hi Igor,

It works well in "Link Parameters" dialog as well.

Could you please provide more information as below>?

  • Inventor version which was used by you
  • Application Options XML file - start Inventor -> Tools -> Application Options -> Export, exporting the settings to xml file. Please send this file to me. Thanks.
  • Video for reproducing steps - you can use ScreenCast for recording

Thanks in advance.

Thanks,

-Rui

Hi Igor,

Thanks for your file.

I would follow up with engineering team for this issue. Thanks for your details information.

Below are workaround solutions for this,

Workaround solution#1,

Go to Application Options -> Save tab -> unchecked "Prompt to save for re-computable updates". Try your wokflow again, and save the second assembly with below setting.

Workaround solution#2,

Do NOT close the assembly 37-5ga.iam after Rebuild All command.

Thanks,

-Rui

Thanks, Rui;

I will give it a try, but you probably should admit that Save saga in Inventor has got more complicated than ten years ago. Without adding any benefits to the end user. I remember the days when Sean Dotson was complaining about "Save" functionality of Inventor. I wonder - what would he had to say now? 🙂

Thanks for your help, Rui!

Cheers,

Igor.
