Threaded features not given in STEP file

I was asked by a machine shop to generate a step file of a base plate that I had modeled in IV. The plate was to be drilled with a number holes for the components. Some of these holes are threaded - so, obviously, I created threaded holes in IV.

Just received a question from the machine shop asking if any of the holes are to be threaded! A bit odd.

When creating step files, are threads translated?

Inventor doesn't create actual threaded holes.  Its an image applied to the hole for performance.  If you actually want to show threaded holes you would have to either model them yourself or use the Coolorange thread modeler.

Zoom way in on your "threads".

Do you see any peaks and valleys of material?

Threads are cosmetic images only - no physical geometry.

If you want cut threads you will have to model them or use the CoolOrange add-in.

But for the shop it would probably be better to give a pdf that specifies the threads along with the STEP model as modeled threads are not really useful except for 3D printing.

The 2d drawing/pdf export is a good place to add manufacturing tolerances, hole call-outs, surface finishes, post-machining operations, paint colors, and other notes required to properly fabricate the part.

Inventor has the capability to add 3d annotations to the model and I believe that some versions of .STEP export will support them.  I have not tried to use them yet.
