Text overwrite mode in Parts List

This one should be quick and easy.  What is the quick key or where is the setting to turn text overwrite mode off when editing parts list?  Somehow I have inadvertently turned it on and it is most inconvenient.  Supposedly there was a prior post addressing this with a solution as I found a post alluding to the prior post and solution but for my efforts I can't seem to find the actual post with the answer reply.

Hi cbaxter,
Can you post a link to alluding post, so we can see the context of what was being discussed?

I don't know of any way to make a parts list so that text overrides can not be made, but maybe I've missed something or am not understanding what you are asking about.

I hope this helps.

Hi Curt,

Is this about "static" value vs "pulled" value? If yes, select the column (or cells) and right-click on a cell -> uncheck Static.

Many thanks!

The post I found was here: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/replacing-text-in-parts-list-duplicate-post-please-del...

I know in office products it has something to do with toggling control and the insert key I think, but that doesnt seem to do it in inventor....I'm editing a partslist and need to add data in front of my existing text but it is currently overwriting the data I want to keep to the right of the cursor as I type instead of moving it along behind the new data so I have to retype the whole line.

Nope, this is in custom part lines added to the part list so no static data to pull from....I've got about 50 different screw sizes and I'm hand typing the company specs and descriptions in on them into the data columns.

Hi cbaxter,

Edit:

I think i understand now. You're saying you have Overtype mode on, but don't want it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insert_key

I think that's just how it works.

If you type anything into your parts list cell it becomes a static override, so generally it's better to right click on the parts list and choose Bill Of Materials, and add/edit the text in the BOM, and that will push through to the Parts List.

But are you saying that you do want to make the text static in the parts list, but you want to use the keyboard Insert key functionality to control the replace vs add to behavior, if that's the case I don't know of a way to change that behavior in Inventor's parts list, I think it is what it is, but johnsonshiue might know better than I on that point.

I hope this helps.

It's a new behavior that just started a couple days ago which is why I'm pretty sure I accidentally toggled some sort of hotkey that triggers this setting...before when I would edit a parts list I would place my cursor and highlight the data I wanted to change, so like I add two new screw sizes I would copy the line from the previous one closest to them and then select the mm size and just type in the 45 and it would replace that only...now it overwrites the entire data string in the cell and I have to retype the whole line instead of just the two characters I wanted to change.  Minor annoyance but a big time saver when its functioning as normal.  This is in custom parts lines added to the parts list.

Yeah this is what it is doing, but the insert key isn't changing it...and its only doing it in my inventor parts lists (on multiple drawings)  it doesn't act this way in the revision list or any other programs, just when I'm working on parts lists.

hi cbaxter,

What version of Inventor (and service pack)? There is a know issue with text getting lost when editing ....something... I don't recall if it's a parts list. Maybe that's what you're seeing.

Also, i just played around with it a bit more (in Inventor 2017) and it seems like the Insert key toggles from Overtype to Insert if I press it when out of the parts list editor. Pressing the key while in the editor doesn't seem to change the behavior. You might try that.

I hope this helps.

I've got Inventor Professional 2018.1 64 bit Build 171...should be the latest subscription to my knowledge,

I've played with the insert key too and doesn't seem to phase it on mine....maybe its time for a new computer...that's what I'll tell my boss anyhow haha.

Hi cbaxter,

Here's the known issue I mentioned:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/general-table-deleting-exiting-text-when-inserting-add...

this suggests that it's been fixed with 2018.1.1

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/disappearing-text/m-p/7274356#M653546

Also I'm not sure if my last statement was true either, as it seems like I can get it to toggle from Overtype to Insert in the parts list editor sometimes, but not always in Inventor 2017? I'm a notoriously poor clicker, and I'm not working on a very good surface at the moment, so maybe I'm the wrong person to be trying to figure this out, because it seems like it might depend on what is clicked on or selected? But I'm not certain. Smiley Embarassed

I hope this helps.

By golly 8.1.1 seems to have fixed it.  Now I can get back to drawing cool stuff once I get these dratted spec tables off my workload!  Thanks guys!
