Testing IPJ Search Path Validity?

We have been having quite a few issues with network response lately and today something happened that makes me think it's not the network or server, it's something in the IPJ search path.  There was a part and drawing that were located outside the project's work path that I was working on.  I copied the IDW and IPT to my project folder (still on the server).  When I opened the part, it popped right open.  I did a Save As and saved it as a new part.  Was going to do the normal thing, open the IDW, do a Replace Model Reference and point to the new part.  When I tried to open the IDW, it was still pointing to the old part that was outside my current project's search path.  It took ten minutes to open.... ugh.

I did a Replace Model Reference, saved the IDW, closed it and when I opened that one it opened in about 2 seconds.

Question is, is there a good way to test the validity of search paths in the IPJ?  And are there things that should be avoided or done to assure good response when setting up the project IPJ files???

All help greatly appreciated!

Also, another thing I noticed today when testing.  Tried to open another assembly and Inventor hung +15 minutes and killed it with task manager.  I P&G'ed a different assembly to a folder on the server and using that project file I opened the file from there and opened in 2:15.  But I noticed in the status bar that when it hung up for a while, the file name followed by <iLogic>

And after that finished, Inventor hung for a while and in the status bar said <Loading VBA Project>.  Just curious if there could be something in the iLogic and VBA that is causing loading to hang.  Not sure how to test that.

We are a 2 designer company and working also of a network share. It alway went OK. Recently we got 2 new laptops (other settings?) and since then networling on the share is 5-6 times slower as on previous desktops. Copying on the local disk makes it super fast, but has other issues like keeping track of copying files back and foreward.

We have the same situation, we have SSD on our local and really fast but can't copy local as we share a lot of files.

Another thing I noticed this morning was tried to open and assembly and after +15 minutes I killed it with task manager.  Did a P&G and copied it to a folder in the same server folders, switched to that IPJ and it opened in 2:15.  Closed that and switch back to the original IPJ and the same assembly that hung this morning loaded in 2:30.  Thought maybe Inventor had cached some files so closed Inventor and tried again.  Still opened in 2:30.   Totally baffling how first thing this morning waited such a long time to open but now it opens in 2:30.

And not sure what would cause this, but started this morning, opened Inventor, clicked on Projects from the open dialog box and it took almost 30 seconds to open.  Seems first thing in the morning things are super s-l-o-w and during the day it gets quicker.  🙄

Rebooted my computer, did the exact same thing and the Project's dialog box opened in 3 seconds.  😲

As a general rule, I reboot my computer at least once a week and shutdown for at least 3 minutes once a month to clear out memory.  Additionally, I restart IV every single day.  Letting it run over night and using the next day, I have found, can cause glitches.  I run an i7 4Ghz 8 core with SSD and 32GB RAM on desktop with a GF RTX 2060 Super.  It does great, but like any computer needs a fresh restart once in a while.  I would love to have one of the business modeling graphix cards, such as the quadro, but justifying the cost of that would prove difficult.

I know some use laptops to model, but I recommend desktop for the heat that is generated when modeling is significant and multiple fans help a lot to keep things running smoothly.

Fun fact, with Windows 10 a restart does a more complete shutdown than shutdown does. I used to shut down every night, but after seeing this I just restart. Neat tidbits to get your Tuesday Wednesday going 😁

True, but I guess it is ingrained in thy head from previous OS's going way back.  Holding the shift key while rebooting or simply turning off "fast" start should yield the same results for windows 10.  I will say the experience of rebooting/shutdowns, I have a lot less problems than if I don't.  This may be due to the fact of the software I use rather than windows itself.  Good knowledge however, thank you.

When I leave at the end of the day I exit all my app's and restart.  Then the next morning "usually" I'm logging into a fresh clean system.  So yes, I do restart before running although it's 12 hours before I log back in.

I just rebooted to try to start clean and an assembly I opened early this morning in a couple minutes took 25 minutes to open.   I looked at the events log and see a lot of errors within the first 5-10 minutes of powering up.  I also looked at the drain on my system when it was trying to open the drawing.  This is the system and doesn't seem to be struggling.

And not sure how good anyone is at analyzing event viewer logs but this is the summary and detailed info (stripped out the XML info to reduce size of text).

Had a new flaky thing today.  Was trying to save an assembly into a new folder, created NEW FOLDER, highlighted folder, renamed folder, double clicked on folder to open it and got the message that it could not find NEW FOLDER, must of been moved or deleted. Exited and double clicked on it again and got same message that it couldn't find NEW FOLDER. Then third time I double clicked on it the folder opened and I saved my assembly.

Any idea what might make something like that happen????

When our server loses connectivity here, sometimes this happens.  IV will say is can't find the file, clicking on it again is all that is needed here.  The loss is so quick that is generally just enough for IV to recognize it, such as saving an IPT/IDW that is open.  If you are having that problem often, your server could be resetting the connection a lot.

We have some flaky things here.  Have a big machine I was working on before the holidays.  On Monday I opened the file in a few minutes and worked on it all day.  Tuesday when I tried to open it, Inventor hung after loading ~200 items, after 20 minutes I killed it with Task Manager, tried to reopen it again but it hung on 0 items.  After another 20 minutes  I killed that, rebooted and tried again.  Took almost 20 minutes to load but finally did and I worked on it all day yesterday.  Today it opened in just a couple minutes again.  But a machine assembly that opened quick yesterday is now hung at 92 items and just sitting for ten minutes.  And I can click on the Project File dialog box in the open file window to select another project and get the spinning wheel for 20 seconds, then Inventor flickers and the projects pop up.  Just don't understand  🙄

UPDATE:  Okay, I feel like I need to dance around a tree wearing garlic and swinging a dead chicken over my head.  Many, many years ago My Documents folder was getting really cluttered so I moved a bunch of stuff to my D-drive and created a startup mapped drive "X" to point to the folder on my D-drive.  C-drive is SSD and D-drive is SATA.  Was getting totally whacked out Inventor processes and started monitoring Task Manager/Performance and noticed when I fired my computer up, my D-drive was running like crazy.  No programs on there, no temp folders, nothing my PC should be doing there.  So I removed the X-drive mapping batch file, rebooted and noticed right away that startup didn't touch my D-drive, Inventor seemed to run quicker and more reliably and files opened quick and consistently.  Not sure why but seems that having the batch file mapping the X-drive was flaking out Inventor.

Below is my file paths in Inventor and curious if anyone sees anything that might be causing response issues.  Also, how do you find out where %USERPROFILE% and %PUBLICDOCUMENTS% are directing to?

If I am understanding you correctly: Just click on the little folder icon to the right of the directory setting (in your application options as shown) and the window will open showing exactly where these folders are directing to. (Scroll down on the window)

Thanks @craig_embry , didn't think to do that.  Thought those we system defined variables that we could see the values of but that works.  Speaking of that, we use common files for many things and when we upgraded to 2020 we ended up with all these 'stray' materials.  Any way you know to get rid of these?

Check this post out.

Seems it has to be done this way.  I have never tried this or attempted to create my own.  It would seem the edits were done intentionally.  Maybe someone else will chime in.

Back on the performance issues this was an odd one.  Was in Inventor was doing the F4+mouse to orbit spin an assembly and it was jittery and freezing so I popped open Task Manager performance monitor and when I was orbiting the assembly my network activity was off the charts and as soon as I'd stop it would go to almost nothing.  I would think since I wasn't editing anything except the view perspective it should of been all happening local on my video card GPU, video RAM and CPU.  Just seems odd that it had to throw a ton of data across the network to alter the view.  Also, I am working remote using NetExtender and RDP so not sure if that was traffic to the server at work or maybe traffic going to my RDP session.  Any clues?

Inventor on RDP?

Remote Desktop means your using work computer through the network.

You're NOT getting any file to your computer.

All the network doing is "stream" your work computer screen.

So the network traffic is expected.
