Templates folder not showing in home window

Hi can anyone help?

I have just installed Inventor 2018 from my official USB install stick (not download). All my settings etc have migrated successfully, however I can't seem to get the templates directory to show up properly in the Inventor home screen / Advanced templates section.

I have set up the application options correctly and the files are there, the project files are showing "default" for the templates directory which when hovered over show the correct path resolved.

Also, when I select new from the menu all the templates show up correctly with the sub folders shown as expected.

Capture 1.jpg illustrates the problem. (Capture 3.jpg shows my 2017 setup and how it should look.)

Bizarrely if I select one of the sub-folders in the same path then the templates within do show up?? Capture 2.jpg shows this.

I have set up every version of Inventor since R11 and never had an issue that I couldn't solve (sometime with the internet's help) but I am stumped here.

For ref I am using Windows 7 64bit, Inventor 2010, 2014 ~ 2018 installed.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Yours Pete.

Hi! The template folder path in Application option dictates the default template path. However, the actual template path needs to be set up in each Project file. Go to Get Started tab -> Project -> click on "Folder options" in the lower panel in the dialog. What is the template path there? You can simply right-click and select "Default" so it will honor the default path in Application option.

Many thanks!

Thank you for your prompt reply, However I have checked this (Para 2 in the OP)

"I have set up the application options correctly and the files are there, the project files are showing "default" for the templates directory which when hovered over show the correct path resolved."

I'm unable to reproduce this issue you're seeing.   Have you restarted Inventor after making these changes?   Have you cleaned out your personal temp (%temp%) folder?  Did you apply any updates to Inventor 2018?

Thank you for your reply Mark.

Somehow I am not surprised you cant replicate the issue.Smiley Sad

Yes, I restarted Inventor several times with no effect.

No, I hadn't emptied my temp folder, I have now done so and did a cold restart of the PC, unfortunately no change.

I haven't applied any updates as there are none in the desktop app to be applied, and though I did not watch the install screen all the way through, I don't believe there were any updates applied during it.

I have also tried the repair install option but this didn't change anything either.

Finally I have noticed that if I use the basic template option in the home window, it does open the default template from the correct directory. So everything is pointing to the right places, but the folder list is just not displaying.

Yours Pete.

I see two different issues.

1 - In 2017 you see the templates and you see all the subfolders

2 - in 2018 you don't see anything.

I am just curious how you get to see the subfolders in 2017 cause I can't get them to show up?

You are asking: how come I can't see sub-folders and I are asking how did you get them to show in first place. Unless I messed up my settings which is never out of the ordinarily for me.

Hello Adrian, Thank you for your reply.

The folder structure in 2017 (& 16,15,14), is the same as shown in Capture 1 except obviously they all have a different parent folder (2017, 2016 etc).

When the path is set in the options/ file tab inventor then uses this folder and any sub folders for templates.

These just automatically show up in the advance templates section, from every article I have seen on changing the templates folder in this way this is the correct and default behaviour. So I believe I remain with 1 issue. Smiley Happy

The sub folders also show up in the new file menu as shown in capture 4.

However, seeing your screen grab there has made me wonder if Inventor ignores certain folder names because they are system default names or something! I will try renaming the folder something other than Templates and see if that works. (Edit: Nope, That didn't work)

Hi Pete,
I was just wondering if you had resolved this issue?
Have you installed Inventor 2018.1? and if so did it make a difference?
You show in Capture1.jpg an empty window for the Advanced Templates but what happens if you select the new (Ctrl+N) icon on the ribbon, is the window also empty?
Jon.

Hi Jon.

Thank you for your reply.

Currently I am on Inventor 2018 no updates applied. The problem persists.

I mentioned in the OP Para 3 that it works as expected when using the new command from the ribbon or the menu and that the defaults on the home window 'Basic' tab are pointing at the correct files.

I had intended to do a complete re-install this last weekend but due to a medical emergency was unable to do so,  I hope to try again this weekend when I have some free time.

Yours

Pete

Hi Pete,
Did you manage to find time to re-install Inventor?
If so, did it resolve your problem.
Jon.

Hi Jon.

Sorry for the delay, I have been working 7 days a week and only just had chance to try.

I have done a reinstall from windows control panel\ programs & features using the inventor Repair/ Reinstall option and after completing the install and restarting my computer I find it made no difference.

The only thing left now it to do a full un-install and reinstall the product from scratch, or just live with it. I mean the product works fine, its just that I have gotten so used to using the home screen to quickly select my new files its gonna be a pain to relearn.

It has also occurred to me that when pointing the path at a folder that contains only Inventor files the files show up, but if the folder contains a mix of files & folders then nothing shows, neither files nor folders? which is kinda odd.

Thanks again.

Yours

Pete

Hi Pete,

When you perform a uninstall, when you have time of course, use the Uninstall utility provided by Inventor, you will find in the Start menu. This will make sure everything is removed correctly from your computer. Good Luck.

Jon.

Well, I guess this will be the last word on the subject.

After using the uninstall utility recommended, I removed Inventor and re-installed. It made no difference. So I decided to go for broke as it were and uninstalled the whole design suite. (Doing PC restarts between every step)

I downloaded the full 2018 installer from the internet installed the suite from scratch (So that I was using a different install file) and guess what? still missing the folder.

The final step (As I thought) was to install the updates from my account. After downloading them and installing all hell broke out, on rebooting the PC I was greeted by all sorts of errors. Inventor 2018 would crash out after a few seconds on the splash screen and so would 2017, I could not run either.

I was so fed up with things at this point that I used system restore to put my machine back to its pre 2018 install state. Installed once more 2018 from the USB key. I still don't have any files or folders in my home window but I am just going to have to live with it.

Its just a thought but given the response by Salariua above maybe the problem is more widespread than first thought but people are not aware its a problem?

I didn't want to pollute your post but on my home computer, I can see sub-folders listed in the home page template section. Tested this way back but didn't see the need to share the info.

It does seem to be something we don't notice.

Hi! Regarding the template files on MyHome. Could you click on Basic Templates button on the left. Does it appear correctly? What is the activate project setting (Project -> Folder Options -> Templates).

I am not aware of a bug in 2018..1 or 2018.1.1 causing the template files to misbehave. Could you try installing 2018.1 + 2018.1.1 and see if the profile selection works better?

Many thank!

The above post is really in the wrong thread, could a mod move it to the correct one here.

In response, sorry for the delay but I cant run the risk of breaking my system and not being able to work during the week.

The basic templates button does show correctly and links to my 2018 templates.

The active project settings for the templates folders are set as default, I have tried changing this to a direct path to the 2018 templates folder but this does not make any difference, the templates still do not show up.

With respect to post 14 and reply above, I have since done the following;

I re downloaded the updates 2018.1 & 2018.1.1 in case they were corrupt downloads, I set a system restore point and shut down all non essential programs including my VC,

I ran update 2018.1 and again this completely broke all my inventor installs, 2017 & 2018. My 3d mouse drivers refused to start up and It also caused windows to have a pink fit, becoming unresponsive and explorer crashing repeatedly, it was very difficult to run system restore and get back a working system, but as you can probably tell I succeeded 🙂

So I am still in the same pickle, both with this problem, and the issue on the other thread (Re: INV 2018 SELECT OTHER PROFILE FOR EXTRUDE OR THICKEN)

Also I now have the added problem of not being able to apply any patches! 😞

Did this ever get resolved?  I have the same issue.  The project is pointing to the correct folder, the folder has templates in it, but they do not show up in the home tab.

HI Ronald.

No I never did, all the problems mentioned above are still the same.

I have hardly used 2018 at all this year as I am working with a client who has 2017 so I have kept with that and am loath to use 2018 at all because it is so broken for me.

Yours

Pete.
