Temp files

Thought I asked this before, but what is with Inventor (or any other Adesk apps) now requiring the clearing of temp files on a regular basis now?

Granted, it was always best practice to clear my temp folder every now and then, but now it seems like doing such is one of the first items to address when a user has a CAD issue come up. It's like now, users must clear the temp files at least once a week if not more and these are NOT large files.

Anyone from Adesk able to shed some light on this?

Hi Jim,

Certain workflows do write temporary files to %temp% folder. For example AutoCAD import/export, modeling operations, assigning appearance/material style, FEA, DS and so on. In theory, these temporary files should be deleted automatically after the operation is finished. However, in some cases, they are not cleaned up. As a result, the temp folder may grow in size. Also, not just Autodesk products leverage %temp% folder. Other applications also dump files there.

It is unclear to me how these files can impact stability. I guess when the number (and size) of temp files grows big, it could impair certain operations when such storage is needed.

Many thanks!

@johnsonshiue , thank you!

Just seemed like it's the new thing to do now.

I understand it's not just Adesk apps writing to the temp folder, but again, just seems like it's become a common task the user needs to do on a regular basis as opposed to before where it was typically done every once in a great while as part of housekeeping or when something goes South.

I recall one user with a fairly new, high end system with a 1T drive, wasn't able to open any files one day. Checked his temp folder and he had about 90 odd gigs worth of temp files!

I have instructed our users here to clear out the temp folder at least once a week.
